Most people who work in the medical field don't understand HIPAA so they err on the side of we can't tell anyone, anything, ever.
I got asked if I had written permission from the patient to talk about DS's bills. I asked what kind of written permission they needed from a six month old.

Lol! Wow that is so ridiculous! "Ma'm we don't have a consent filled out to tell you the information"I would so say "how about I birthed him! Does that count as a consent for ya?!"
This is as bad as when I dropped a really sick, 3ish week old kitten off at the vet. I called the next day to check and they told me they weren't allowed to give me any information b/c I had signed him over (someone found him and called me, so I took him in). LOL. I called back for the mgr, she was like they said WHAT? The kitten had died the night I brought him in:(

That is ridiculous and funny.
I used to have insurance company call asking for one of my daughters when they were first born. Ummm hello dimwit look at the BIRTHDATE and you figure out if you talk to them.

LOL, I would have just stuck the phone by them and let them cry into it.

My husband said the same thing after I hung up with them.
I work at a health insurance company and that's ridiculous.
I do as well. If you tell me your the parent of the child (under 18) on the plan and you can verify their info (ID, name, DOB) then you can have all the info you want about them!
That's stupid. Putting HIPAA aside, I work in an adult ICU. We ask for only 1 primary contact person to call for info. Otherwise we get all 6 kids + sisters, bros, cousins and neighbors who call for info. It gets too confusing and time consuming when trying to determine care.
I hate the assumption that the man is head of household. Why if any one of us is "head" it's me, I keep the household running and make more than dh, so there!
