If it's too late to do so tonight, I would definitely be knocking on her door tomorrow to find out what happened. I am interested to hear what she says.
OP, you should text her and let her know your cat died. lol
Maybe not that the cat died, but that it's acting a little funny so before you take her to the vet you thought you'd ask of she was acting and eating normally when the neighbor came over. Give her room to hang herself by bluffing that "oh no, everything seemed fine!!!"
It's obvious she didn't come. I left one can of food on the counter and it was still there. And the near empty bowl of dry food.
Yes, but does she know that this is the set-up? (I can't remember if she's fed them before) Or will she just think that you came home to an empty bowl of food & assume the cats ate whatever she put out each morning?
What's so stupid- for her to bail on such a simple task, she's now lost a good working relationship with you. She HAS to realize that you doing favors for her now is done and over when she can't even do something this simple for you.
My BFF and I were joking up unreliable people this weekend. This is why I have spent years carefully crafting a group of ultra responsible friends. I hate everyone when I have to deal with irresponsible people. I also hire neurotic, type A people. It works well for me.
Sorry your neighbor was shitty. This was seriously a tiny thing I wouldn't guess almost anyone would fuck it up.

No - it was very clear that all she had to do was split the can of food I left out between the cats and top up the dry food and water.
I also left her some magazines (we trade all the time) that she didn't take.

oh no! poor kitties!
You probably would have been better off asking the 8 yr old to do it ... they are usually THRILLED to have some level of responsibility (I know our neighbors son was when we had him feed our cats).
This is awful, your poor cats this happened to a coworker recently. Another coworker was supposed to catsit while he was gone for a week or more. The catsitter only showed up once when she was supposed to come like 3 times! Cats were out of food and water when they got back
We asked my MIL to feed and clean the litter box for our two cats while we were on our honeymoon for a week. While they were being fed, the litter box was full of waste. The night we got home (2am), it took me about 20 minutes to clean it out. She said she didn't know how to deal with the litter box but she "tried".
I told H that we will figure out something next time before asking her to look after them.

LOL what does that even mean?
I wouldn't even consider asking her for next time.
Honestly, I don't know. The litter box is pretty big and has a cover on it that detaches. The only thing I can think of is that she didn't know how to scoop with the lid there and it was too hard to scoop at the back. IDK. Her excuse was bullshit to me because it's not fucking rocket science. I think she just didn't want to touch it. The ironic thing is that she is a custodian for a living.
My teenage daughter checks on our neighbors cat every year when they go away for two weeks and she loves it. She goes over there, feeds her, makes sure the litter box is clean, and plays with her for a while. Sucks that an adult can't be as responsible.
Upon further interrogation, Millie said "I saw nothing!"
Cleo just laughed.
Aw, my cat was named Cleo
Her name at the shelter was Elizabeth Taylor, so I renamed her Cleopatra, or Cleo for short. Her sister was Joan Crawford and is now Mildred Pierce, Millie for short.

Love it! Cleo was a Cleopatra too and she definitely lived up to the name.
