This is late, but I figured I'd join in with the other birth stories - I feel like the story is longer than the labor!
I went in for my routine appt on 6/12 at about 37 weeks and got a pelvic check and NST. Doctor said I was mayyyybe 1cm, but I had three contractions (that I didn't feel) while on the monitor. Since I'm AMA, she didn't want me going past my 6/29 due date, so she said the next week we'd talk induction, since it didn't look like anything would happen this week. Fine with me - my ML was starting on Monday and I had a few things I wanted to take of.
I had been feeling crampy for a couple of weeks, but with so little progress, and because the baby hadn't dropped, I figured I was probably good for another week, at least.
Monday morning around 3am, I woke up with more cramps. I ignored them for awhile, trying to get back to sleep, until I realized they seemed to be coming fairly regularly, and ramping up, then back down. Huh. Remembering everything from here, I got up and wandered around a bit, had a few glasses of water, then put my feet up. Still coming every 7-8 minutes. Huh. Washed my hair at about 4am, "just in case," went to the bathroom and saw the tiniest speck of red. Well, hell, I never lost my mucus plug, so maybe this was the start of that. Figured I'd go back to bed and try to get a little sleep.
At 7:18 I heard/felt what I thought was a huge kick at first, (lol, FastHands) but it felt weird. Stood up and felt drippy. H rolls over and mutters, "You up for the day?" to which I reply, "Yup. So are you. Pretty sure my water just broke." Called L&D to let them know we were coming and directed H as to what needed to come with us (we had an appt to get the carseat installed that day, lol) while I did my hair.
Get to L&D, breathing through contrax. In triage, they admit me before even running my sample; the nurse laughed and said, "Yeah, I can see the amniotic fluid. You're staying." They checked me - 5 cm, and, "Wow - she's got a lot of hair!" Okay. I knew I wanted an epi, even though the pain was still tolerable. They finally get me set up in a room and we're waiting for the epi - still 5-6cm. By now, I'm moaning through contractions. When the epi team shows up, I'm sitting on the side of the bed so they can place it, and I feel kind of, "Uh, oh," like I need to push, but don't say anything for fear they won't give me the drugs.
They check me, and I'm complete. But baby still hasn't moved down, so they let me labor down for awhile. I doze for awhile, maybe an hour, and the nurse says,"Let's try a few practice pushes and see if she'll move down." Okay. She tells me what a good pusher I am, which makes me lol because I've seen A Baby Story where they always say that and then are pushing for hours. So I take it with a grain of salt, until H's eyes get a little bigger and the nurse says, "Well, don't push any more until the doctor gets here. Wow, baby's got a lot of hair!"
Doctor gets there in about five minutes, and a couple more pushes and she's out! They had some difficulty delivering the placenta, and I lost about six units of blood, so they wouldn't let me hold her right away. Six hours from water breaking to birth! Such a great experience - I wouldn't change a thing!
