Ok, I'm going to share. I changed my living room in the last 9 months. The furniture needed to be replaced for comfort and I need to brighten things up. I think I'm still going through shock at the change the colour makes.
Before
After
I'm going with brown curtains, I just need to find some with blackout backing.
Wow that looks very different and a whole lot brighter! I actually would stick to the lighter curtains. The brown seem too heavy for the windows with the brown sofas.

The light curtains have the lining, but it seems off balance to me with the couches. And I have open concept to the kitchen with dark cupboards. I may be stuck with the light curtains until I find good brown ones.
It looks much brighter and more open. The lighter curtains give it a fresher look. The dark curtains feel a bit too heavy and take away all of open feeling.
Maybe a pattern with a little brown would help add balance without feeling so heavy, or maybe some darker stain on the furniture or chunky dark frames on the art would give you what you are looking for.

I thought of that but I was worried about clashing with the pictures. I guess I could change the one between the windows but that seems to be creating a domino effect, paint the walls, now I need to change the curtains, which means I have to change the picture...where will the insanity end?

It never ends. I call it the "If you give a mouse a cookie..." effect, which only makes sense if you are familiar with the book. ;p
I like it a lot! The color makes a big difference.
Would you consider doing the curtains without the tie backs and using a wider curtain rod? The cabinet may need to be pulled away from the wall a bit so that curtains can go behind it, but I think it will help with the heaviness of the brown curtains.

The brown curtains are too much. What about a patterned curtain in a lighter color? Or an accent-type curtain? It looks like your art has a bunch of colors to choose from - something like this might be nice:

That would make the windows look a lot bigger. I'll try to picture it.
