employee: anything else? Me (impulsively): yes, I want to buy [the couple next to me] sundaes lady: (surprised/sputtering) thank you...we had a coupon.. me: look! We have a coupon and I want to buy their ice cream!
Was as I an jackass for using their coupon? A small part of me thinks I am (now that I'm home and had some time to think.). It didn't occur to me until I got home to say "keep it for next time!"
That was really nice Of you. If we were the couple, we would have thought you were an awesome person and happily handed over our coupon. They'll get another one Sunday anyway.
This is the story of my life. I'm going about my day and minding my own business when all of a sudden some JACKASS buys me ice cream out of nowhere. Some people, right??
The way you write it, it doesn't sound like they were offering it. But you were there, we weren't. If they were actually offering it, then no, of course you're not a jackass for using it. They got FREE ice cream.

First of all, if buying complete strangers ice cream makes you a jackass, you're welcome to be a jackass to me any time you'd like. :-)
Second, they're the ones who brought up the coupon. They obviously went into the store intending to use it. I don't think there was anything wrong with what you said/did...they still came out ahead and you did something really nice.
That coupon was probably going to expire soon anyway so I wouldn't feel bad about using it. At first I read the OP like they were using the coupon as an excuse to decline the offer but if they were just offering it to you, I think it was totally fine to accept.
I've never actually had a good-hearted stranger offer to "pay it forward" for me. Whenever I've been in these sorts of situations, the person was so incredibly creepy, I had to decline.

My first job was at BR. Their ice cream is good, all those artificial flavors are yum. My second job was at Hagen Daz. It is impossible to be an asshole when buying someone else ice cream. I have used a coupon to buy the person behind me things, when I had a two for one coupon, like at Arby's, I am not eating 5 sandwiches, but they used to have a promo where it was $5 for 5, or $2.50 each for 1, so it made more sense to get 5 and give away 3. Some random woman and I went in together on a purchase at a clothing store recently because they had a buy 2 get 1 free sale, and I wanted one and she wanted 2.
Who are the nine morons who voted yes? How can anyone possibly be a jerk for buying ice cream for strangers???
I want to know this, too. They were planning on using the coupon and paying the remainder. This way they only had to use the coupon. They are better off than they would be had they not encountered the OP, so how can she be an asshole? Leaving people in a better position than they would be in had they not met you is pretty much the definition of being a nice, non-assholey person, IMO.
