I'm a big fan of ceiling fans... it really helps me feel cool and I hate stale air. Without them I tend to crank the AC. We have them in each bedroom and our family room. We are in the process of replacing the lights in our new house and are considering replacing the light in the kitchen with a ceiling fan. Has anyone done this? Is it a big no-no for some reason?
I have one in my kitchen and love it! I love ceiling fans for the same reason you do. The one in the kitchen helps blow the hot air around. Even with the exhaust fan on, it gets stuffy in there. It is close to my gas stove but I just turn it down if I need a steady heat.

We've pretty much always had one over the kitchen table, in every house we've lived in since we got married. DH is VERY attached to his ceiling fans. I love it, it definitely makes a difference and it's easy to keep clean...it's not over a cooking area so I don't have to worry about grossness from that. I take a damp rag to it once every week or two for the dust and that's all it needs.
I'm ok with it over the kitchen table, although it'll cool food down quickly. Over the prep area? No.
Our house had one over the prep area (by the stove) when we moved in. Never used it, and eventually replaced it with a regular light. When we took it down it was SO GROSS. Oil and grease all over it. Ew.
We have them in all the bedrooms and I am a huge fan, but kitchen prep area is a different animal.
