Typically I give a gift for the shower and cash for the wedding. Last night I had a minute and checked out the registry of a wedding we are attending in October. The comforter they requested was $360 and is now $140 plus I have a coupon.
Would you get them the comforter instead of cash?
For this person in this area, I was planning in giving between $100-$125 in cash.
I give gifts instead of cash most of the time, even for weddings in an area where I know cash is the norm, so I'd totally buy the comforter. I prefer giving actual gifts, and more often than not, can give a bigger $ value gift than check because of a coupon or something. I always ship ahead of time though. I don't want to lug it TO the wedding, and nobody wants to lug it FROM the wedding.
Oh yeah -- DEFINITELY don'T bring the gift (particularly a physically large gift) to the wedding. Ship it ahead of time. But a thing (rather than cash) is a perfectly good wedding gift.
My mom's BFF bought me 12 place settings of our (not cheap) dishes. I didn't know they'd gone on sale right before the wedding! It was awesome. And I went to Macy's the day after the wedding and loaded up my trunk full of dishes for like $80 total.
