I just got my new Frye boots from UPS, went to pull them on, and one of the bootstraps popped out, tearing the leather. I'm bummed, but I think it's funny that I have faulty bootstraps.
I liked this only because of the joke. Bummer about the Fryes, though.
yeah, I've been wearing boots for 30+ years, and I've never had this happen, even with cheap shity boots.
I think they have a design flaw. They're unlined, so the interior of the boot shaft and the foot area is that rough suede-like stuff, the leather's thin and soft (which is nice, but not tough in the slightest), the boots are mid-calf height, and the bootstraps are held on with two rivets and no reinforcing stitching. I wasn't even pulling them on all that hard, just giving them the same kind of yank I gave the other foot...
I'm kinda bummed, because my memory of Frye boots is that they were tough like iron. I think I'm going to take the money and buy me some Fluevogs.

I think I'm dying!! I have the cold sweats from hell, and I've soaked through 3 shirts and 2 pairs of pants today. This amount of perspiration is not normal! It's Ebola, isn't it?
In other important news: I had a life-changing breakfast yesterday.
Yeeeessss???
Cheddar and scallion biscuits topped with soft scrambled eggs then covered in sausage gravy. Served with hash brown potatoes and grapes.
AND ALSO: Bacon encrusted in candied pecan. It was literally encrusted like it was dipped in liquid praline.
PLUS a strawberry lemonade fizz. And coffee, of course.
All locally sourced and made in-house. I did not personally know the chicken and pigs that were used in this breakfast, but I'm sure they were well-liked.
FloFTW that sounds delicious. I had a maple pork belly potato hash Sunday that I am still thinking about.
How did the inspection go?
Oh wow that sounds amazing too.
It was good! Nothing that we didn't expect (it was built in 1922 and our current house is 1918 so NOTHING is perfect around here). Roof will probably need to be replaced in 5 years. AC and furnace probably need to be replaced like now. We knew that going in though. We are just asking for a few things like GFCI outlets in a few places and minor electrical work, a few pieces of downspout replacement. None of them are deal breakers but we see them as safety issues for ANY occupants of the house.
Give us good-home-inspection-dust. We're doing the house we're buying today. No whammies!
That house is gorgeous! Good luck!
Our inspection is tomorrow and I refuse to get excited about the house until it's done. That hasn't stopped me from mentally laying out furniture, designing a new kitchen, and agonizing over paint colors though.Â

Speaking of breakfast... One of my go - to camp breakfasts had been ah-mazing Blueberry Cream Cheese Stuffed French Toast, made over the fire in a pie iron.

They don't have their brunch menu online because it changes all the time but it's always amazing. Dinner is too expensive for us to enjoy frequently but brunch is quite reasonable. One of the owners has a background in set design or something so the place is really cool. We usually see kids there during brunch too.

Oh thats been on my list for a while. I'll add a brunch notation....
SBP, it's perfectly ok not to play into other people's games and to cut them out of your life. Her issues are not yours. ::hugs::
This times 10000%. There is nothing wrong with saying "I'm sorry you won't let my family see your child" and then move on. (easier said than done, I know).
So you know I do not speak to my sister. I haven't seen her in 4ish years. My parents still had a relationship with her mainly because they had custody of her son, but shit went down about two years ago and my parents relinquished custody of him, mainly because they finally realized as long as they had him, they were going to be part of her cycle. She always needs someone to be the bad guy - in the immediate family, when we all spoke, it was always me. Maybe because I was everything she was not (i.e. normal and well-liked in the family), maybe because I was the youngest, maybe because I was the only other girl? who knows. But growing up I just kind of figured that was how it went, the youngest got picked on, etc. But as I grew up I realized more and more how abnormal her behavior was. She decided that my brothers and she were BFFs (as were my SILs) but I was persona non grata. Of course my brothers wanted nothing to do with her, but they are able to be civil to her because they dont have the same history with her. But she didnt realize that. So it kind of further skewed her treatment of me because as adults, she thought it was her+my brothers against me, not realizing that they had long since left her camp.
Anyway, I had a huge long post written but decided it was unnecessary, lol. But basically my parents finally cut her out as well (unfortunately it included my nephew, but after three accusations of child abuse, my parents felt they could not be alone with him anymore). honestly our lives have been so much better. I am sad that I don't have "a sister" in my life. I am not sad that I don't have MY sister in my life. I've started thinking of my family unit as two older brothers and me. I often forget I have another sibling.
I know my sister's behavior stems from mental illness. I know that. I am not unsympathetic to that. But that does not mean that I need to be a part of it, feed into her episosdes, be manipulated by her, or anything else. I'm sad that I probably won't see my nephew again. But I just can't emotionally handle having that in my life. and I've stopped feeling guilty over it.
I'm not advocating fully cutting your sister out. But that may be the only answer, and it's okay if it is.
Oh and my mom's mom is also pretty mentally ill, and my mom didnt speak to her for maybe 5 or 10 years when we were little - the rule was, my grandmother either had to get psychiatric help, or my mom would not let her have contact with us until we were old enough to understand that she was not well. (she was doing things like pitting the kids against my mom, telling us what a bad mom she was, and so on). So starting around 6th grade we started seeing her again, and it's been fine since then, and our relationship with them is pretty normal. We are not the worse for wear for not seeing them during that period. Again, for my mom, I think it was about not wanting to handle the emotional aspects of the mental illness and not risking her children in the process.
Sorry that was still long. I tried to cut it down, i swear. LOL. anyway, basically, I think you need to protect yourself and your family first. Anyone who tries to interfere with the parent-child relationship is doing your family a major "disservice" (for lack of a better word). And if thats what your sister is doing, thats dead wrong.
I'm doing another daydrinking city day next Friday. We're going to the oriels game in the afternoon - looking for a breakfast spot and probably lunch too within walking distance of the stadium with stuff to wander around and look at in between.
We were traveling through this weekend and the hotel had one of those DIY breakfast buffets. Not great, but free and quick.
So I put my bread in the toaster and started getting some eggs. This German woman walks up to the toaster, pops up the lever, and starts to take my unfinished toast out of the toaster to put hers in. When I told her it was mine and *obviously* still cooking she glared at me and stalked off muttering to her son in German. I thought of CEP immediately.

Why do you have all these daydrinking days in the city??? So jealous!
have you been to Miguel's? It's in silo point. It's really good Mexican food. that could work for lunch. It's not really walking distance to the stadium though unfortunately.
We used to go here a lot in law school. It's nice if its a pretty day, they open the windows and you get a good cross breeze. the owner can be a little temperamental, but we almost always had a good time here. Literally maybe a block and a half from the stadium? I assume it's still open, LOL.

Again not walking distance from the stadium but golden west in hampden has a really good breakfast as does blue moon in Fells. Wit and Wisdom is at the Four Seasons so it depends on your definition of "walking distance" but it's supposed to be fantastic and has breakfast during the week.
also, Dempsey's in Camden Yards has pretty good food. (you can access it from inside or outside the stadium). the beer tries to be good but is just kind of meh, but the menu itself is pretty decent surprisingly. They def have lunch, I dont think they have a breakfast menu though.
And I know it is so cliche but mother's does have good breakfast food.
and of course there is Miss Shirley's for breakfast or lunch.
In Portland, I had this fried chicken with veggie gravy. Eggs, house potatoes. The chicken was amazing, not that really light flaky stuff, but super crunchy and tender. Gravy was interesting - veggie didn't mean mushroom, it had like mirepoix pieces in it.
But then. The biscuit. It was the footprint of a cereal bowl and the plate it came on with the country gravy was a full sized dinner plate. It was just a little sweet, almost cornbread like, so with the chicken it was like perfect chicken and waffles. With gravy.
I had that breakfast a month ago and I'm still talking about it.

it's only my second one! This one is kinda accidental - MH was supposed to go to a 7 PM game the other week with his friends , but the game was rained out and rescheduled to a day game next Friday. None of his friends wanted to go to that one and they couldn't find a option that worked for everybody to trade the tickets. So they all bowed out - which left us with three tickets to use if we wanted but for a 1 PM game. I suggested we just take the day off and have a kid free city day again - MH agreed, my mom was free - so here we are.
I think this will likely be our last hurrah of random fun days until the holidays.

For breakfast, everyone raves about Miss Shirleys. I have never been myself but the menu looks great. If I were to get lunch near the Harbor I'd probably do Joe Squared. It's in PowerPlant which I normally avoid, but the food is just so damn good.
With the circulators you could easily go to FedHill, Fells Point, or Mt Vernon. If you want to go to Fells Point, Slainte is the only place I can think of that has breakfast early-ish on a weekday that's really good. I have never been to Blue Moon, I know it has a huge following but I just see people waiting in line for hours and I can't imagine any food is worth that. One Eyed Mike's would be my suggestion for lunch over there but there are a million choices. If you get back that way after the game, Waterfront Hotel has the best Happy Hour.
No idea about breakfast in FedHill but Abbey Burger and Delia Foleys are great for lunch. Baba's Kitchen is a bit out of the way but it's great byob Lebanese. The VIsionary Art Museum has reduced price tickets this month because they're switching exhibits and the restaurant in there is supposed to be good too.
I can't think of anything exciting in Mt Vernon that is open during the day.

I may have just drooled a little. That sounds AMAZING. If I ever make it to portland I'm going to need the name of that restaurant lol.

Oh and, we're going to the game tomorrow night. I managed to score front row seats in the new rooftop bar area.
that was one of our choices for trading our tickets! I mean...not in the cool area. In the cheapass nosebleeds. But we couldn't line up a weeknight sitter on short notice anyway.
