I volunteered to make lunch for a band that is performing at our church this week. I was thinking beef stew and buns/cornbread but I am debating if just a basic make your own sandwich station with some fruit and chips would be better?
Dairy, what do you feed a bunch of hungry men that goes over well? It had to be easy enough I can prepare it while also taking care of 8 children at the same time
I would go with either a pulled pork or meatloaf done in the crockpot. You could have burger buns available for sandwiches with either the pork or meatloaf.
I really hate when there is no possible option for vegetarians. And the manly=meat stereotype is a huge pet peeve of mine. Given that, I'd go with a sandwich bar to allow people to eat what they want to eat.
I get what you mean. And where I come from 99.9% of men who want hearty are not vegetarians so it's not a stereotype.
Things I make:
Casserole/hotdish whatever you call it where you live. That's a big one (and there' a ton with no cream of ___ out there). I made Southern Moms Cook homemade hamburger helper the other night and it was delish. I like casserole because it can sit for hours and not get ish, it feeds a lot of people fast.
I do a lot of make your own sandwiches. It's a big hit and fast and easy. Or I will do hearty sandwiches (grilled ham and cheese, reubens, grilled chicken on buns with lettuce and tomato etc). You could do the same with a salad bar (grilled chicken, steak strips). Guys here actually like a lot of salad with breadsticks.
Soup is a good one but seems messy for what you want. I actually don't do it for the people I cook for all that often. They don't have time to sit down and eat it, it doesn't pack all that well and is impossible to eat one handed while you work. My help kind of HATES soup day as a result.
Can you do a carryout chicken from the grocery deli? I do that a lot in the busy season here. Big hit.
I also grill a lot of hotdogs and brats and serve with chips and fruit. I'm done in 10 minutes and everyone loves it.

My husband is in a band and I don't think heavy and heart is the way to go, it's like a workout for them so it just typically doesn't sit so well, I would go with sandwiches
