I went on a big vacation with family/friends and it made me want to improve my style a bit. Where do I start? I'm so boring... I get jeans from Lucky's, event-type dresses from Express, t-shirts from Target. I recently got a pair of Sam Edelman(?) sandals that are really cute so... what do I wear them with?
I'm obviously a bit more on the casual side but I want to look a little nicer than the shorts/tank or jeans/t-shirt combo I wear literally everyday.
When I was trying to define my style, I started an inspiration board using a bulletin board. When I saw outfits I liked in magazines or catalogues, I ripped them out and pinned them to the board. It gave me a clearer picture of the styles I liked. For awhile, I would kind of mentally check things I saw in the stores against the image I had of my style based on my inspiration board.
I am not sure if that helps to give you a jumping off point. Being on this board is a big help as well - everyone is really helpful when checking the ugly/cute factor of clothes, helping to put together outfits, etc.
I really like the idea of keeping track of things I like before I go shopping. I feel like I have it in me to be more stylish, but then t-shirts are just so much easier.
SSM: It wasn't so much what they were wearing in particular, although I did like that my one friend will wear nicer shirts even with her shorts/jeans and then add sandals and a necklace, as much as they just had more general style. Like, they wore belts, and knew how to match jewelry. They also wore a lot of casual dresses, which I liked.

This board does the outfit of the day post (OOTD); it's a good way to see what others are wearing and gage what you like and don't like. Also, pinterest is a great place to get inspiration (kind of an online version of the bulletin board pp mentioned). Some of the larger department stores also have personal shoppers. Or just ask one or two of these friends to go shopping with you. You can fun trying on a bunch of different things they recommend and see what works for you and what doesn't. You don't even have to buy anything...
I'd say the easiest thing for me to spice up tshirt outfits is accessories. I feel like my outfit is so much better with a long necklace and a cute watch. It's silly, but wearing flat sandals rather than flip flops also helps me to feel more put together.

Ditto Kare! Also, fit is important when you are trying to feel less frumpy. I feel better in a fitted t-shirt and well-made jeans with fun accessories than I do in a boxy tshirt and jeans that don't fit well.
It sounds like accessories would be a good place for you to start. Definitely check out our pinterest board too. There's everything from really casual looks to going-out/party looks.
