I think I need a pair, but I'm not looking to spend too much. I only anticipate using them occasionally since I do most of my runs early morning when the sun isn't that far up.
Do I need to be picky about these? Does it really make a difference?

I think having a pair that fits you well and has non-slip gripping does make a difference, but $$ isn't everything. I have a pair of Tifosi Slip sunglasses. I've been using them for a few years, and I really like them. They were $50 at my local running store, I got my second pair (left the first pair on a plane) even cheaper on amazon.

I can't run in sunglasses without them constantly fogging up. I think you have to get vented ones if you are a hot-head like me. I wear a visor for this reason. If anyone can commiserate and recommend a style that doesn't fog up, let me know!
I bought these post LASIK, and I really like them. I never needed sunglasses before, but now my eyes are a little more sensitive to light. Still well worth it though! They fog up a little if I stop mid run, but defog once I get moving again. $32. Also sturdy enough to hold up to a toddler who has worn them and stepped on them.
If you are patient, you can find some good deals on Oakleys. I tend to be a bit rough on sunglasses-and mine have lasted me 6 years. I figure the investment is worth it if I can take decent care of them and make them last.

I have a very small face so it's hard to find glasses that sit right on my ears. I liked my Oakley Quarter Jackets, but the lenses started to bubble after a while.
So, I recently started wearing these. I can't speak to the longevity, but they are very comfortable and inexpensive. Tifosi Radius

I second Tifosi! Not too $$ and they don't slip around when you sweat.
I wear mine in all weather, regardless of sun. It shields the world from witnessing the horror of my tired eyes. I spent about £30 on mine ($50 I think in US money) from an online retailer here. I noticed that I was one of only a few wearing them on Sunday's race. It was overcast when we started but the sun came out during the race and I was grateful I had mine on.
I've survived so far with a cheapie pair from Target. Just trial and error- I went with the lightest pair I tried on and they've been great. They're not sport sunglasses, just random.

Thanks!
I got these and ran within them today for the first time. I love how they aren't too dark and I can still see when it's shady.
I have a pair of $$$ Rudy Projects for tris, but I run more frequently in Target knock-off Wayfarers. As long as they don't grip your head too tightly or slip down your nose, I don't think you need to be too picky!
ETA: I suck at reading responses before posting. Those look nice! My husband has a pair of Tifosis for running and loves them.
I really prefer polarized lenses for running in the sun - and have a pair of peppers & maui jim's for running. My family has an optometry practice, so i get a family discount that makes it much more affordable. The peppers sunglasses i bought cheap from REI. They work great for running & boating.
