UPDATE: He's gone. He tried to use the litter box about 1pm and made a mess of himself, then couldn't clean himself up. That was my sign that he was ready to go - he was almost obsessively clean and tidy, and it was probably degrading for him to be in that condition. We wrapped him in a towel and took him into the vet. We waited a bit b/c the vet was doing another euthanasia in the exam room next door, but then it was our turn. He was just as sweet and lovable as ever, but you could tell he was completely just DONE. They did the one-drug method into a vein, and it was quick and seemed painless. I was glad that he died with dignity and grace, just like he lived. Afterwards, while we made arrangements with the office staff, I could hear the vet (literally) sobbing in the back room, and that was really touching. They loved him too, and it meant a lot.
He was my best buddy for 11.5 years, and I'm going to miss him something fierce, but I'm glad his fight is over and he can be at peace. RIP little buddy.
“Those final weeks, spanning end of summer and the beginning of another autumn, are blurred in memory, perhaps because our understanding of each other had reached that sweet depth where two people communicate more often in silence than in words: an affectionate quietness replaces the tensions, the unrelaxed chatter and chasing about that produce a friendship’s more showy, more, in the surface sense, dramatic moments.”
― Truman Capote, Breakfast at Tiffany's: And Three Stories
********** He hasn't really eaten anything since Thursday night. We've made an appointment for 2pm. I could use good thoughts today - I'm not handling this well at all.

I'm really sorry. I had to put my cat down on the 5th. It was really hard for me emotionally. The good thing was that for him, it was very easy. He had kidney and liver failure, and it put him out of his misery. Your head knows it's the right thing to do, but your heart aches. I understand.

thinking of you! This is such a hard decision to make but I hope that in time you will be able to know that you did the right thing and focus on the awesome memories you will always have of your sweet Cat.

I understand, jacinthe. My old man kitty went to the vet today as well, for pretty much the same thing- he's about 16 and no longer eating/drinking well... certainly not enough to sustain him longer than a week or two. He's lost weight, and it's very sad. The only good thing is that he doesn't seem to be in any discomfort. Big hugs, sweetie.
I am so sorry! Any of us that have ever had pets, especially those of us that our pets are our kids, dread this day like no other. My thoughts are with you. (((HUGS)))
