I traveled without food. WHAT WAS I THINKING? OMG I am dying.
I was at a meeting all day today, and made the arguably bad call to take Amtrak home instead of fly. I couldn't get a direct flight, and all the layovers seemed to suck - either like 3 hours long or 45 mins in EWR that I was never going to make - so I opted to take the 2-leg, 6+ hour Amtrak ride, Union Station in DC to NY Penn, and then from Penn home. It wasn't that much longer than two-leg flights, and at least I could work, use wifi, walk around, and not deal with Taking Scissors Away... Hour-ish layover at Penn around 7-8pm, time to grab dinner. No biggie. Guess where this is headed.
So the Acela from DC to NY was cancelled completely. I had enough time to get re-ticketed and get in line for the next regional train. I sweated the connection at Penn (scheduled 9 minute layover). I ran straight from one train to the other and made it. But guess what didn't happen? Dinner.
It's now 9:30. I won't get into my home station for another 2 hours. The cafe car is closed. I had a latte and a piece of pumpkin bread from Starbucks before I realized my train was cancelled, and other than that have not eaten since noon. By the time I get all the way home, it'll be midnight and 12 hours on Starbucks alone.
Please help, I need entertainment and encouragement that I will not die and I should not eat my own arm off. And also a strong reminder to always travel with snacks like I am a toddler.
Needless to say, you have our permission to stop by the nearest fast food place on the way home...
This! It happens- and it sucks. Hang in there. I'm not the best in either situation - when I have snacks I eat them way too soon and still end up eating whatever crap is available.

I definitely struggle with this - which was why I didn't bring anything. Plus, "oh, Amtrak is usually pretty on time!" I'm more careful when flying. Alas.
Calvin's picking me up when I get in -- since I flew down yesterday I couldn't easily leave a car at the train station. I have expressed to him the urgency of my hunger situation; hopefully he will bring me something for immediately consumption. There's not much in the house (or wasn't when I left yesterday), since we just got back from vacay 40 some hours ago. Re-entry into the real world sucks.
Oh my gosh I just got hangry for you reading this! Did Calvin bring you food? Did you stop at the golden arches? DID YOU SURVIVE WITH BOTH ARMS IN TACT?
I seriously hate that feeling, I wish it upon no one.
I feel like Calvin's entire reputation as a husband hinges on whether or not he showed up with food last night. Did he??? Slash are you still alive?
lolol.
He brought me a granola bar, and had pizza waiting for me at home (~20 mins away). I'd call that a B effort for 11:30 at night. Maybe B-. I mean the granola bar was definitely much appreciated, but... I kind of wanted to cry when it was gone.
To the extent that it mitigates his H&F reputation, he is a much better race sherpa than late-night food bringer!
