I thought I was prepared for my triathlon because I've been doing some open water swims. Really, I was better prepared because my kids like to jump on my back in the pool. This was no joke. Nonstop contact. There were only 300 people racing and they divided everyone into 5 waves, which left 2 minutes apart. I don't know what was up but I couldn't put more than 4 strokes togeher without getting hit/kicked/swam over.
I know I could have swam a lot faster but I'm happy because I didn't drown. I didn't even freak out despite all the contact. I spent a lot of time trying to get away from people.
The races was gorgeous. The weather was perfect. I probably should have ridden my bike in the past month. I struggled a lot on the bike.
Garmin times: 16 minute swim (750m, included a 2 minute run to transition) 55ish minute bike (14 miles, very undertrained) 33 min run (5K) fine. I'm slow. Could have been faster if I trained better in the bike. My legs were pretty dead.
Nap and shower time. I'm happy. I don't have my official time but I'm guessing about 1:54. My goal was under 2:00. Looking forward to improving next year.
Also, I love triathlon. Way more fun than straight running.
ETA: I just looked closer at my watch (can't get it to sync with my new iPhone so I have to dig out the cord). My time should be around 1:49, I think.

Awesome job!! I'm sure open water in an actual race is just something you've got to do a few more times to get used to better. It sounds like you did great though; that's a strong sounding time to me! Congrats.
Go to YouTube and look for the Clif Bar triathlon start commercial!
And, everyone I know is slower in the open water than the pool.
Haha, that video is great.
kams, it was fun. By the very end, I stopped being all "oops, sorry!" whenever I made contact and just started swimming. I'll have to do that the whole time next time.
