with my laptop dead, I"m flirting with Chromebooks.
Who's got one? Like or no?
I mostly use my laptop for this kind of stuff, and for playing with pictures. The playing with pictures may or may not be an issue... apparently there are some decent photo editors for Chrome.

That's what I have and it's fine for my purposes. It has its limitations, but nothing I've found work arounds (my biggest issue was MS works, but google docs solves that). I have not tried to do anything with photos on it, though, so I have no idea how it works for that. Overall I'm happy with it.

mominatrix you'd have to pick a specific one to be able to compare it. Overall, I don't like them bc OpenOffice/Google Docs doesn't always play nice with MSOffice and you can get a comparable workhorse laptop (something like a Lenovo) in the $400 range that doesn't have the same limitations as a Chromebook.
If you don't use a ton of MSOffice stuff or photo editing, though, it very well could work great.

Lurker popping in - I have one and I love it. The only downside I see is the fact that you need the internet/wifi to get it to work. It hasn't been a huge issue though. I get around not having MSWord on it by using OneDrive if I HAVE to have Microsoft for something. Worked well even when I was in school.
We have one (a Toshiba) and love it. However, we pretty much only use it for Internet stuff (online shopping, bill-paying, web surfing, watching videos.) I have a work laptop that I use for real work and we have a desktop that we use for stuff like photo management. We probably could do most everything on the chrome book if we wanted to.
I can't speak to photo editing, but I recently bought a Chromebook to replace my iPad for everyday use. I like it for internet, documents in Google Drive and the webcam works pretty well for Skyping with our niece and SIL. I am not in love with it, but I do like it and use it much more than I used my iPad. The battery life is fantastic. I can charge it overnight and use it 1-2 days without a charge, depending on how often I use it and what for. It's also good for Netflix when traveling. It weighs nothing, and I love that.
My main complaint is that it gets very hot when I use it for a longer period. Not a huge deal, but it's worth mentioning. I got a refurbished Samsung for $99 on Cowboom. I think it is definitely worth the price.
