We have a stair gate. It's sitting in the box because our walls are speshul and I can't put it in without assistance.
This morning DD2 was next to me when I was washing my face, seconds later, she was rolling down the steps.
When my heart started beating again, I felt (and still feel like) absolute shit. This child does some or another face plant every day on my watch. I bought a playpen yesterday and still.
I let my DD fling herself off a changing table that came up higher than my waist because I looked away for half a second. I'll never forget the look of fear and confusion on her face as she hit the floor flat on her back. She was less than six months old.
It happens. James almost broke his nose yesterday trying to climb onto a stool to watch me cook. His foot slipped and he faceplanted into the cabinets.
A has done that twice. Heart stopping. The last time, she somehow landed on the tile entry and clocked her head so hard she had an egg for a week after.
This summer, I told her to run to me with the Cheetos and she tripped and fell with no hands out, cheekbone first onto a pointed rock. She now has a hole scar on her face. For Cheetos (which she didn't drop, which is why she didn't put her hands out). Yay, mom.
shorti rolled off my bed while I was in the bathroom shortly after learning how to roll. Luckily I'm a slob who never puts laundry away so she landed in a basket of clean clothes.
I let a really heavy door in a store plow into my kid, which sent him flying into a brick wall. I should have realized it would happen but I wasn't thinking, he was sore but fine.

I always tell myself that babies evolved to be resilient because every parent has that "But I only turned away for a millisecond!!" moment. It happens. That's how I make myself feel better.
I read somewhere that kids are designed to fall from arms height? Evolution helped us clumsy folks lol.
If I listed all the times my kids were accidentally hurt on my watch, you might be compelled to call CPS, but suffice it to say you aren't the first nor the last mom to feel guilty about what you could've done differently. It'll be ok!
Heck, I was holding LO2 (7m) and whacked her head against the door frame the other night. She stared at H who was in her line of sight like WTF was that!?! cried for a minute and was ok. Kids are meant to get bumped/bruised in life.

When my oldest sister was barely old enough to pull herself up, she was sitting in her drop-side crib with the side lowered while my dad sat in the rocking chair across the room. He said she started to pull herself up, and he just said, "No, don't do that." Then, because she was a baby, and didn't understand what he was saying (Duh, dad!), she pulled herself up, toppled over the railing, and fell on her head. She's the smartest of all of us, so everything turned out ok. Still, he totally say it happening, but just didn't want to get up. Don't feel too bad!
My DNe is already missing a front tooth (a bugs bunny tooth or the 'central incisor') AND has broken his femur. This was all before he turned 2! We call him a weeble-wobble. The kid just has no sense of self-preservation.

Poor, summer baby. On my first mother's day ever about 8 years ago, we were actually staying with the inlaws at a cabin after a funeral and I was mad at my DH b/c he hadn't done anything for mother's day. I left the baby on the couch to go grab a cup of tea and he rolled off and smacked his head on the coffee table. I was inconsolable, but that baby just had a red mark. There have been others since then.
