I was just coming on here to post the same thing The My American Girl dolls are on sale for $67, too. Now I have to make a quick decision of whether or not to break my rule of the only American Girl doll I'll buy DD is a historical doll.
ETA: problem solved... They did have one historical doll (Marie-Grace) included. Sold! Yay, DD is getting her first AG doll! I'm actually a little jealous, since I always wanted one but never got one.
my h just told me to buy the bitty baby. L will not play with it for probably a year, right? i do not want to store something until next xmas.
I don't remember exactly how old your child is, but DD started playing with dolls around 18 months. We got DD a bitty baby for her second birthday, and it is by far her most-loved toy.
Okay I'm getting one. DD has a red tint to her hair with blue eyes. Do I get the red hair with grey eyes doll or blonde hair with blue eyes? AHH decisions!!!

Careful, my mom and I ended up with 2 because of this dilemma, lol. I sold one here to someone who missed the deal so it worked out.

Well it told me the blonde hair blue eyes was sold out so I got the red hair grey eyes. I'm happy about it!

C got Bitty Baby for her first Bday from my mom. She got interested in her around 14 months and now plays with her regularly.
Same. My daughter got hers at 12 months and plays with it all the time (she's 16 months now). She calls her "baby" and hugs her, pretends to feed her and pretends to change her diaper. It's really cute.
WWWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. I missed it again! And I was totally planning on getting dd2 one for Christmas because she is obsessed with DD1's. If anyone double bought, I'm your girl for unloading it.

damnit! I missed this! I would ahve bought my 1 year old a Bitty Baby! We are an AG obsessed family! You don't want to know what our bill was at the store a couple weeks ago lol
At this price it's a doll, stuffed plush animal plus two books for $50. It's not a bad deal but I wouldn't pay full price. American girl dolls are also a status symbol for young girls. It's like having a designer purse or something.
(huh)
I don't see it as a status symbol. I mean it can be, but there's so much more. There's a certain joy in the line. It's hard to explain. We like that there are books that deal with preschool feelings, advocacy, and learning skills. They can dress up together, and kirklette can do some of the similar things that I'm doing with Baby V, on her own (aka without getting in my way).
I mean, I'm sure you could do this with other dolls, but I think part of the price is paying for all the amenities. At the risk of sounding crazy, much like the historical line, it's not just the doll. It's the world that comes along with it.
And .... now that I've finished my quasi dissertation on AG, I'll go sit on the MMM crazy bench with the Disneyworld folks. Not too close though .
I want to like this a thousand times. Some of my favorite memories as a kid were playing with my AG dolls with my friends and discussing the different stories. I learned so much from the historical dolls and their stories.
I have all my store saved for my 2 girls and I am SO excited to share it all with them. I have almost all the book sets saved as well
We actually just took our first trip to the AG store a couple weeks ago. There was never one near me as a kid and I was so excited that one opened in Columbus.

My kid is happy with the target/knock off dolls (and crap), and some hand me downs from my niece. We do love the books though. Even my boy likes the choose your own adventure ones. A few are on sale, but that is one thing I will spend the money on. We often find them used, but they have them on sale too.

I wasn't sure on buying such an expensive doll, so we stopped in the Disney outlet today to see if DD would like something. I tried a few styles of dolls, but she mostly preferred stuffed animals. Do I buy something and hope she comes to like it or just wait a few more months? Sad.
