I would choose a color scheme and work from there. When we had ours, DS wore a red zip-up sweater with a navy stripe. So I wore a grey sweater with a red scarf; S.O. wore a navy sweater with a white stripe. We all wore jeans. Coordinated but not matchy.
Red, white, black and neon colors are the hardest to photograph if you are taking them outdoors and there are big blocks of that color. I try to include a neutral (grey is great for this) and at least 2 other colors that coordinate and add pattern into the mix. I've done Navy/Grey/Brown/Cream, with stripes as the pattern. Dark green, purple, grey and pink with flowers and plaid as the pattern. I've done black/white/grey/red with stripes as the pattern when we did something indoors.
