A cooler should be fine; even if it thaws slightly it is fine to re-freeze if there are still ice crystals. If you replenish the ice it should stay frozen!
Do you have a parents' listserv in your neighborhood? I just saw a listing from someone offering a freezer stash on mine. I bet there were some takers.

Are you moving a deep freeze or was it just in the fridge freezer? I researched it when we moved and a deep freezer should still be cold enough for 24 hours as long as it's not opened.

It's just a fridge freezer, and we aren't moving the freezer itself. Just the contents.
Ah, ok, darn.
If you do pack it in ice I would probably refresh every time you stopped as opposed to just halfway through.
I found a place that sells cheap dry ice, and they knew all about transporting breast milk. The lady even had a sheet with recommended pounds based on quantity and distance. Thanks for the idea, simpsongal!
That's awesome! I was also going to say this. DH took dry ice on s camping trip and their steaks were still frozen solid after a day or so.
I moved across country with mine. I got a styrofoam cooler and put like 200oz and 5lb of dry ice. It was frozen solid when I arrived 15 or so hours later. They say if you tightly pack it and put newspaper on top you don't even need ice, but I was too chicken to try that.
I was going to recommend to fill empty juice or milk containers with water and freeze. Put them in the cooler with your milk + extra ice and you should be fine. Glad the dry ice people knew what you needed to do!
