My 2.5 year old will probably get some Thomas the train stuff, Lego, and maybe a Leap Pad or something like that. I've also debated getting him his own iPad mini so he doesn't use mine for the kid apps (occasionally he will end up on the Internet by accident).
Other things may be a bike with training wheels, bike helmet, pajamas, clothes for the winter, indoor shoes for preschool, craft supplies, books.

We are getting DS stuff for his big boy room. We got rid of a lot stuff before we moved across country, so I want to replace some toys with less baby-ish versions. A tool set, a big metal Tonka truck, legos, hot wheels race track, marbleworks, games and books.
gah, I have no idea. DS2 will be 3 in January and my sister asked for a Christmas list today. Wha?! He's got all the major stuff as hand-me-downs from DS1, so I'm pretty much at a loss. And, with his bday about 2 weeks after Christmas, I've got to come up with 2 lists.
When DS1 was three, he got: loads of Thomas trains, a vTech Innotab + games, an easel and art supplies, plus some random puzzles and books.
This coming Christmas DS2 is getting a big trampoline (joint gift for both,) a cozy coupe car, and misc. little toys. XH wants to get him a power wheels because he's obsessed with the little police car his cousin has, but neither of us has a good place for him to drive it. So we'll see.

My 3 year old is getting a train set. I don't know what else yet. I guess I better start thinking about that kind of stuff. Ugh.
For all of you guys who said magnatiles: YES. We got those for our kiddos two Christmases ago, and it was the BEST thing we've ever bought for them. They still play with them almost daily.
What's on his list? Lollipops and Ring Pops and Books LOL!
What I am buying him?
More Magna Tiles Tweak, Professor Inkling, Dashi and Tunups from Octonauts Kindle Fire Kids edition Some new Books Play Doh A Red Sox Teddy Bear Lollipops and Ring Pops for his stocking A XMAS Ornament and X MAS PJs
I am sure I will think of a few other things as time goes on... His birthday is in November and he gets SPOILED by his grandparents.

We bought a big set of magna-tiles for our kids for Christmas when they were 1 and 3. Now they're 3 and 5 and they still LOVE them. I'd say DS2 started really getting into them when he was about 2 or 2.5. I think they're a really good investment at that age because they will play with them for many years. It was probably the best gift we've ever bought our kids.

An art easel Wooden Thomas trains Books (Curious George, Berestain Bears, Dr. Seuss) Duplo Legos Jigsaw puzzles (the 12- to 24-piece ones that fit into a frame) Make-believe stuff (more food for his kitchen, dress-up outfits)
I'm also looking for musical instruments for him, especially a kids' guitar.
DS is super into Planes Fire and Rescue right now and he has asked Santa for Windlifter and Blade Ranger from the movie. And Chug, the fuel truck. He already has Dusty Crophopper.
He also wants a purple bike. I was hoping to buy that for his birthday in May so he could actually use it in the warmer weather. But we will see.
We may also get him a couple games like Sneaky Snacky Squirrel and Hi Ho Cherry Oh.
