We went out for dinner with 5 other couples last night.
We got there a little early ordered a drink at the bar. Everyone else comes. We settle up and take our drinks to the table. Everyone else orders a drink at the table.
The check comes and rather than doing individual bills the waiter took it upon himself to announce that he just divided it 5 ways.
DH and I were both a little pissed. Our total bill which should have been about $100 was suddenly almost $170. Every other couple had an appetizer but we didn't because the options were all shellfish and we are allergic. We then split a salad (some couples split others had individual salads each). We both had entree's in the $20 range. Others ordered the filet that was almost $40. For dessert we spit, some couples split others had individual desserts.
I'm not pissed at my friends but I am pissed that the waiter took it upon himself instead of asking. We've been there before and done individual checks.

Also, that's when you just tell the waiter that it's not OK with you to split 5 ways, so go split it like he should've. He was probably hoping to save some time, but if it's not what you wanted, you should've spoken up.

I don't care if I'd ordered virtually the same thing as everyone else, he shouldn't have split it without asking first, unless that was the policy, and should have been stated beforehand. Otherwise, he should have asked first. Stop being lazy.
Meh. When we go out with friends, we always split the check equally, rather than nitpicking what people ate.
That said, I've never been to a restaurant where they didn't just bring the check to the table and let us split it ourselves. Any chance someone at the table told him to just split it 5 ways?
