I like it when they're a set distance from the edge of the cabinet, and I think they look best about an inch lower (or higher, if upper cabinet) from where the inset panel on the door starts.
Also, I love those latches. We had them in the house I grew up in, which was also an old Craftsman. I miss that house. I wish I had more pictures of it. Your kitchen always reminds me of it.
Actually, I just measured a few and think 1/4 down/up the door is good. Think that will look weird?
Just make sure you can reach them shorty.
I'll suggest putting some painters tape on the location you're thinking of and see how they look from afar. Also have your husband and you practice trying to use them. You might find that they need to be lower like the ones in your picture since turning something really high can be cumbersome.
No advice but post pics when you've installed them!
Ha, like you guys could convince me not to PIP something. I think I'm going to take Fox's advice and live with some tape for a while just to see how it goes.
Trust me it's so much easier to move the tape than to patch a hole if you decide they aren't in the best spot. I made the mistake of not being anal enough with the cabinet maker and he put the knobs on himself without me telling him where I wanted them. They aren't a lot different from where I wanted to have them but the look still kind of bugs me. There is no way to move them now though.
