Public transit is both easy and cheap (and also the cleanest I have ever been on). You need to take a bus out to the zoo though since it isn't on a metro line. Just FYI, if you are standing alone at a bus stop with multiple bus lines and you see your bus coming flag them down. If they don't have anyone getting off and aren't sure that you want to get on they won't stop.
I will ask H what site he used to find hotel deals and report back.
For food, take the kids out to the Newton Circus hawker center one night. There are a bunch of great things to eat right next to each other and it really comes alive in the evening.
Singaporean food is my favorite and absolutely amazing and I'm not sure if you have reached this point in living in Asia, but I will throw this out because I would be a horrible person if I didn't: Singapore has a Chili's. It is down by the river and there is no shame in taking a couple of kids and/or yourself for bottomless chips and salsa or chicken fingers.

I would DIE for a Chilis right now. For myself. Lol. And thank you!

Popping in not for Singapore help but to let you know that if you know anyone affiliated with the military here, there is a Chilis on one of the bases.

oh reeeeeally! So now there are 2 top priority reasons for finding a BFF on base! (The first being that I'm beyond desperate for out of season fruits and veggies I actually recognize because my kids refuse to eat non-western food)
I guess you already booked a place to stay, but we stayed at the Conrad at liked it.
Public transport is gray. Cabs are cheap too.
We went to the Zoo, or actually the river park next to the zoo, and it was great. The normal zoo has white tigers, but the river place has pandas.
Our main goal while there was to eat as much as possible. We went to Lau Pa Sat, maxwell road, newton circus, tikka center, and old airport road food centers. Lau pa sat and tikka center were my favorites.
I really enjoyed Singapore and it is great for kids. I actually scheduled a long layover there next week on purpose just because I want to go eat some char kway teow and roti prata.
