Students are using the hashtag #PrayersForAlbemarle on Twitter to leave messages for other students at the school.
According to the school’s website, the warning bell, which is the last bell before classes start, ran at 7:55 a.m.
With only one shot fired this seems less like a school shooting incident in the sense of the mass casualties and more like a issue between two youths. I wonder what the neighborhood is like? In 1991 I walked out of health class right between two gang members who had pistols pointed at each other. It was a rough neighborhood, pre Columbine. Sounds similar.

Whether we classify this as a "school shooting" in the sense we're used to now depends on intent to me. Did he shoot the one student with intent to shoot others before he was taken down, or did he specifically target that one student without any intentions of continuing the violence? Either way, guns in school and teen violence is an epidemic. I wouldn't downplay this at all just because "only" one student was injured. But I think calling every act of gun violence at school a "school shooting" cheapens(?) the term somehow. I don't know.
I don't know how to express this without sounding flippant.
"WSOC is reporting that the suspected shooter, identified as Jalen Russell and and the victim, Bernard Miller, were engaged in an argument before the shooting occurred."
Which still begs the question...why do kids have guns, let alone why they have them at school?!?!?!

this is along the lines of where I was going. but I might have sounded flippant.

Oh yeah, I was agreeing with you. I wasn't trying to imply that you were downplaying it, but it reads that way to me now. Anyway, it sucks.

Ugh, how awful. Whether it was a "school shooting" in the shooting up random people sense or an argument that escalated to a shooting, it's devastating. Where are teenagers getting guns? Why are they bringing them to school?
I feel like it's always a "school shooting" if it's in a school. A "mass shooting" could be the other term for something bigger.
If my kid is in school and I get a text saying someone was shot/school is in lockdown/or anything else alarming of that nature, then it's a "school shooting."
Suspect sought in Kentucky high school shooting; student injured
(CNN) -- Authorities are searching for a suspect after a shooting at a high school in Kentucky left one student injured, a spokeswoman said.
The shooting took place Tuesday afternoon at Fern Creek High School in Louisville. It was not immediately clear whether it happened inside or outside the school.
One student was transported to a local hospital with unknown injuries, said Jody Duncan, a spokeswoman for EMA-MetroSafe. She said that at least one suspect was being sought.
"We do have reports that it's a male, about 6-foot-5, wearing a gray hoodie, black pants with a gray stripe, and about 15-16 years old," she said. "We're not sure if he is a student at Fern Creek High School, but we do know that he's a younger individual."
The shooting prompted a lockdown at the high school and at an area elementary school. School officials were in the process of connecting students with their parents, the spokeswoman said.

And I sound jaded!
Albemarle/Stanly County is a little more rural than surrounding areas of that high school (Concord, Charlotte) - so it is kind-of surprising.
When i was in 6th grade (1993) we had a classmate bring a gun to school because he was "mad" at one of our teachers. It was unbelievable at the time - but his punishment was suspended for the rest of the year. (also in the greater Charlotte area)
