We will be in the market for bedroom furniture very soon - we discarded all the crappy Bob's furniture we had when we moved, so we have nothing for our bedroom in the new house. Bob's is not an option this time!
I don't know what to look for to ensure that we get a great set that will actually last. We already know which mattress we will buy, so we need a King bed (possibly Cal King), nightstands, and dressers. It seems like any place I look, there are quality issues and I'm just not sure if anyone out there makes pieces that actually are supposed to last anymore! Should I stick with 100% solid wood or are other options okay? All I know is that I like the look of dark wood best (espresso-type color), we dislike sleigh beds and prefer straight lines, and I strongly prefer a matching bedroom set.
Any stores/brands that you've been happy with? We haven't pinned down a price point yet but I'm all ears for any suggestions especially because I know we may have to pay up if we want long-lasting furniture. Thanks!
High end furniture is still being made. Chances are you'd tire of the design before it would wear out.
If money were no object, I'd be looking at Stickley, Henredon, Statton. I find better made case goods tend to be more classic in design and are almost always solid wood with inlays or veneers if part of the design.
We have a set by Lane, Gramercy Park (minus the canopy). It's solid wood with dove-tailed joints. Unfortunately, it's no longer being manufactured, but I've found quite a few furniture stores that still have it. When I needed a replacement pull, Lane customer service was great.
We bought pieces from the Whittier Wood McKenzie line through Furnitureland South. They ship nationwide or you could likely find a Whittier Wood dealer in your area. We got the dark cafe color and we are very happy with it. I really liked the line because they offer so many different pieces so you can fit any room. DH's dresser needed to fit between two windows and finding a decent sized dresser that met those measurements was a challenge. We got the mantel storage bed, 2 nightstands, a tall dresser for DH and the massive 70 inch wide dresser for me. That thing almost didn't fit through the house! . I am really pleased with it and it should last for many many years.
I don't have a set. I have a leather upholstered headboard from Ballard Designs, a pair of 80s vintage Drexel nightstands I still need to paint, and a pair of 60s Drexel dressers that I bought already painted. The quality is great, but the wood is/was in poor shape, so painting is/was a good solution. I think a mix of pieces looks so much more interesting, I'm still pondering mirrored bachelor chests for nightstands.
I agree with this philosophy.
I have noticed in recent years that designers seem to feel that sets are out and that mixing pieces has a more collected look that will pass the test of time. An entire set that matches may look dated at some point, where individual pieces will look collected over time. Slight variations in wood tones can be another way to add texture and interest as well.
We've had this bed (and coordinating dressers) for 8 years, and it still looks good. It's darker irl than in the picture. I'll add that it's solid pine (which people either love or hate).
