I am looking for inspiration I have a tattoo on my hip that I got when I was 20, and it's shoddy work and meaningless. I would really like to cover it up with something I like more, but I am really struggling to figure out what.
My tattoo is a sun that is probably about 2 inches in diameter, black ink, so there are some limits to what I could do (for instance, I love little bird tattoos but that won't work as a cover up here).
Lol I actually love that this question gets asked frequently.
I have an impulse Celtic butterfly tattoo on my butt I got 10 years ago. It's inside the an lines so only DH sees it.
I have a branch of a cherry blossom with a green sparrow on the side of my right wrist. Covering a scar and in memory of my mom. The sparrow's color is the same as my mom's eyes. I added the sparrow to the branch on a second trip where I got an impulse tattoo of a quasi transparent lung cancer ribbon on my right inside ankle.
The end.
But I'm planning one of water color style orchid for my 40th birthday and return to my country after my mom's passing.
My first was a peace sign with a purple rose going through it. It's on my right wrist. It was a total "OMG I want a tattoo and I really like this!" moment.
My second is a "Zoso" symbol from the Led Zeppelin 4 album. That's on my left wrist.
I have the quote "We are the music makers; and we are the dreamers of dreams" on my lower back, right side. I just really love that part of Ode by Arthur O'Shaughnessy. Oh and it's from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
I have "Let It Be" with flowers and piano keys on my upper back, between my shoulder blades. I just absolutely love that song and it really resonates with me.
On my lower back (left side) I have Kurt Halsey's "About a Boy" print but I have it with sand and water added (all in color). There are three footprints in the sand. One for my grandfather (who passed away and I was extremely close to), one for my aunt who died from breast cancer and another for my other aunt who died of lung cancer. They all loved the shore so I thought it was perfect. It's definitely my favorite tattoo.
On my right foot I have "Love" but stacked like the statue in Philadelphia. Around it is a crooked heart that is also a Kurt Halsey signature. I got it because I am from Philadelphia (born and raised) and I love this crazy city.
On my left foot I have a black bird and the words "be free". It's from The Beatles song Blackbird (another of my favorites).
On the side of my left foot I have Audrey Hepburn's autograph. I just love her and her work (entertainment and humanitarian).
I'm not totally opposed to one, but I don't know if I have a design that I want to commit to having on my body for life.
Also, my mom would cry if I got one. lol.
My problem is that I already am stuck with something on my body for life So I'd rather change it into something I actually like.
I could remove it, but since it's in a place nobody sees unless I want them to... it doesn't seem worth the money/pain/time. I think a coverup would be easier and cheaper.

I have a fairy on my back I got with friends in college because it is pretty.
I have a four-leaf clover on my foot. It is representative of a summer camp that was a huge part of my life. I got mine with several other people, including my bff. It is kind of boring, just a quarter sized clover so I want to have something like this done, but not sure if I want to go through foot tattoo pain again and for longer.

I have too many to list them all.
Most meaningful? Pobody's Nerfect- written in my favorite font (Nelly Script) over my old cutting scars. I got it on the 3rd anniversary of being cut free.

No help for inspiration since I can't get tattoos (allergic to the preservative in the inks) but I have helped my BIL design his over the years.
For a cover up you might want to find out locally who does really good artwork. They can take a look at what you have and come up with a design that will cover it over and might include birds or something similar. BIL has had three of his teenage tattoos (one his entire forearm) covered over and you wouldn't be able to spot any of them the artist did such a good job.
IF I could get a tattoo, I would choose a compass rose or a sketch drawing of the first tall ship I worked on. I doodle it all the time. Oddly enough, anchor symbols drive me crazy since so many people have them and THEY ARE NOT CORRECT. No anchor in history looks like that symbol that everyone uses.

L wrist: double stranded poem Hip/belly: colored stars R forearm: poem in Farsi L shoulder: an anchor with flowers and my children's birth dates Back of neck: seahorse They're all significant and special to me and each represent significant times in my life. ETA: my shoulder tattoo is a cover up that was also in black ink. Now it's pretty white and pink flowers wrapped around an anchor with their birthdates. Research and find a good artist because it can be done!
