I was blonde for like the last year plus and a few months ago went quite a bit darker and redder.
I love the look you posted. Also the one bonnie shared.
If that is you in your avatar (I assume it is) I think you'd look great with hair like in the pic you posted.
One thing--are you gray at all? I am and going darker is a bitch in terms of how quickly my roots show. It was easier when I was blonder, although I still like the color now.

Oh sorry! Although I was coloring to cover gray by the time I was 27 or so!
You know, it does not feel healthier at all. But I think that is because I've been pulling the color through more and color is so drying. Before, I really was just doing it on my roots because I had paid a lot of money for those blonde highlights. Now the red/brown fades really quickly so every time I color I'm doing all of my hair.
Yours would feel healthier I think because you'd do it once and probably then only need to cover the roots. Go for it! It is so fun to change the color. I always feel so good after a change. Probably because I overthink it for a long time first so when I finally just DO IT I'm so happy.
I tried to go auburn a while back (I'm naturally a light brown) and it really was a bitch to get rid of. I felt like even after I had it re-colored with some new highlights, you could still see the auburn under it.
I recently went from dirty blonde to auburn. I'm loving it so much. I say go for auburn!
Don't do auburn! I colored mine a similar color and almost a year later my hair is still screwed up
Sorry your hair was screwed up, but I've done shades of red (every color, really) several times and never had this problem. Maybe results vary depending on hair type or whatever. I just have to stick up for auburn because I am seriously loving mine. I honestly wish I would have done it sooner.
Red just doesn't stick for me. I love to go burgundy
Sorry to come back to an older post but this intrigues me. I am red right now. I do it myself with color from Sally Beauty. The red fades so so fast! Can you give me any more info about burgundy? Like if you do it yourself, what is the color? Thanks!

I'm jealous lol. I just got mine done again (root touch up) and kick myself for trying to be bold that one time every time I write the check to the hairdresser.

I do it myself, my favorite is Feria. But I'm cheap and buy what is on sale. It sure does last longer than the red.

Thanks! The red doesn't look the same after 2-3 weeks so maybe I'll investigate this.
