LANSING, MI — The College Republican National Committee is raising eyebrows with an online ad based off the show "Say Yes to the Dress," comparing voting for Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder and Democratic challenger Mark Schauer to shopping for wedding dresses.
A young woman trying on dresses describes the Snyder as a "trusted brand," but her mom wants her to buy the Schauer, which is "overpriced and a little outdated."
The ad, edited for release in multiple states, is reportedly part of a nearly $1 million national campaign aimed at drawing young voters to the Republican Party. It mimics the TLC television show and asks voters to “Say Yes” to Snyder.
“How do you reach the generation that has their earbuds in and their minds turned off to traditional advertising?” CRNC chairperson Alex Smith told the Wall Street Journal. “It’s our goal to start the conversation by presenting ourselves in a culturally relevant way.”
But the ad seems to have rekindled an old conversation rather than start a new one.
Feminist blog Jezebel mocked the Florida version of the ad as proof that the GOP finally “gets” women. Nancy Kaffer of the Detroit Free Press offered a similarly satirical assessment here in Michigan.
“If we can just get this ad in front of every woman in Michigan before Nov. 4, Rick Snyder can win this thing in a landslide, propelled by the votes of ladies who just want to get married. Ladies just like me,” Kaffer wrote in her column.
