We can get flights there for pretty cheap for a long weekend. So far I have done absolutely zero research. Anyone been? Recommendations? Places to stay? Should I skip it and just go somewhere else?
I liked Taipei better than Hong Kong, which I realise is blaspheme. We were treated WELL because we were a group of white people, but that's neither here nor there.
Taipei 101 is a must visit, I enjoyed Long Shan temple.
We never took the metro because cabs were cheap but I hear it's amazing and cheap.
Definitely go for it if the flights are cheap! I really want to get out of the city and see the beautiful countryside. How much time do you have?

I have not been but I want to go soon-ish. From what I've heard it seems like a pretty affordable city, and easy to navigate. If you do go please write a review afterwards!

I read an article about how Taipei is the new hotspot in Asia for food too!
I've been but it's been a long time and DH's family basically took care of us. Eat xiao long bao and mangos while you're there. I also went to Taroko Gorge, but that's a day trip. Everything else is a blur.
If it were me, for a long weekend I'd probably choose Hogn Kong over Taipei if you've never been to either.
Yes, from SF! We've been to HK before (and the flight isn't cheap) and xiao long bao is H's favorite. I'm sad that I can no longer do long weekends to Europe easily from all the way on this far far away coast!

Wow, that seems...aggressive. It would be easier to go down to L.A. and hit up the Din Tai Fung down there, LOL.
Did you really do long weekends to Europe from Chicago? I know it always sounds good in theory, especially from the East Coast, but I've never actually done it. Lame. Of course, I plan to do LOTS of that now
I've done London, Madrid, Paris, Rome, and Munich from Chicago for long weekends. Shortest was for 2 nights. Some of these even involved layovers!
However, now I'm older and I work more and need more sleep (or at least business class) so long weekends are harder but I'm desperately trying to fit travel into my ridiculous job.
