OK, this thread is a sort of random stream of consciousness along the lines of the Daily Kos, but it has some interesting points. I'm not going to paste it all here, as it's long, so you can click through if you want to read more.
One of the things we’ve mentioned occasionally about the short-sightnedness of the “crush ordinary workers and squeeze government so that it becomes incompetent and no one will want to pay for it” is public health risks. Wealthy people can’t avoid contact with people at the bottom of the economic food chain: servants, yard men, hospital orderlies, service staff in restaurants. They might be able to insulate themselves from bad economic and political results of their looting schemes, but they can’t escape the ravages of infectious diseases. Remember, FDR was a polio victim. And this has been brought home earlier than we might expect by a medical facility that caters to the well-heeled becoming the American ground zero for a disease from poverty-stricken West Africa.

I'm not in ebola panic mode, but the more I read about these hospitals, particularly the one in Dallas, the more I'm troubled by how little is going in to protect the workers on the floor. pugz's post really drives it home. The fact that workers who might be exposed have to take unpaid leave suggests that the hospitals are putting profits over both worker safety and public health. WTF. Any CEO who proposes such a policy should be immediately fired. It's so contrary to what the mission of a hospital actual is that anyone who thinks that's a good proposal is clearly unfit for their job.
I see a lot of blame falling on the CDC, and they've certainly been incompetent, but really, most people in hospital management in this county need to start having their feet held to the fire.
If MSF can treat thousands of Ebola victims and only have 16 workers contract ebola, and we treat 1 ebola victim, and (at least) two workers come down with it, there is something fucking wrong here.
If MSF can treat thousands of Ebola victims IN PLACES WITH NO RUNNING WATER and only have 16 workers contract ebola, and we treat 1 ebola victim, and (at least) two workers come down with it, there is something fucking wrong here.

So all the news outlets are reporting different things (figures) but apparently there's an Ebola Thing going on at Southwestern College near San Diego.
Depending on which source you read, either a student was on the Cleveland flight with Amber Vinson or a friend of a student was. They've also either been evacuated from campus or quarantined on campus. Take your pick, I guess.

I'm curious why the first nurse's dog wasn't put down like the nurse in Spain's was. Is it just a difference of procedures in diff countries, or had she not been around it? Just seems like there was no time wasted in euthanizing the other dog.

I think we are rapidly approaching public hysteria.

Somewhere I read the person quarantined in Ohio had contact with Amber, second nurse.
There's also a Yale doctoral student being tested because he just came back from Liberia.
No other info, just blurbs without links, what I saw.
Eta: I'm sorry, I skimmed and didn't see that your link was re: San Diego. I thought it was the person in Ohio.

Scientist/health officials and government folk said we aren't sure about the transmission possibility for dogs. They said that this gives an important time to watch and study the dog. So that is what is going on.
This San Diego thing seems like 6 degrees of separation from Ebola.
Someone feels ill that was near someone who was On the plane with amber Vinson?
But the middle person doesn't feel ill?
Or like Ferris Bueller:
Economics Teacher: Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?
Simone: Um, he's sick. My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious.

It's kind of like when you hear about some one whose kid has lice and suddenly your head is itching like crazy and OMG-I've-got-lice-now hysteria sets in.

Thanks. I wasn't sure if Spain was just more cautious, or if this nurse hadn't been in contact with it, etc. In the pics though, the dog's caretakers are very well suited up.

This is potentially the most concerning thing I've heard about Ebola in the US. And I don't mean concern about the spread of Ebola but concern about the spread of hysteria. I am actually angry that the media is reporting on this.

has this been posted yet? My friend just shared this tweet with me of a woman at Dulles airport in a homemade hazmat suit. Sorry I couldn't repost the tweet, can't access it at work. That is the picture anyway

You know how there are Asian tourists who always wear face masks at airports? I told my husband that the people who do that must be flipping out and I can't imagine what they'll come up with.

I thought they do that out of politeness to avoid infecting others when they have colds.
I thought it became a thing when SARS was around in order to avoid infection.
In either case, the paper/cloth masks won't really stop the flu. Or ebola.

I actually saw an FB post about how we'll go to Martial Law and then end up in FEMA camps. I'm on my phone but I'm sure some of you have seen it. I'm so f*cking done with FB and people's bullshit over this.

This is interesting because during the epic ML thread last week there were 3-4 of us wondering if this was a good idea to do with the dog in Spain and we were met with quite a bit of disbelief we could be so dumb.

Yeah i heard it on the radio and was like those ml ladies were right lol
Apparently one of our nurses is going to west Africa to help with Ebola, and won't be back at work for 3 weeks. No word on if she has to use PTO but speculation is that she will.
I won't lie, it makes me nervous for when she comes back to the community. Even though I work in a hospital (non clinical), I know my chances of getting it are slim, it's human nature to worry a little bit.
I think it's important to point out that in America you are still more likely to die of a gun shot than Ebola. So. There you go America. Freak out accordingly.
