Today it is being announced that he is being named the new managing partner of his office. This is an exciting opportunity for him. The firm's managing partner asked the outgoing managing partner for DH's office if he had suggestions for an internal candidate when an outside candidate fell through. He suggested DH. They flew him down to San Fran last week for an interview with the firm's current managing partner (who is retiring in a few months) and incoming managing partner. Apparently they liked what they heard and they offered him the position.
It's an excellent opportunity for a number of reasons. The office has had a few problems that need to be resolved; the main office has some serious concerns and they think DH is the one who can handle it. What I think is impressive is DH has been with the firm less than seven years and his trajectory has been phenomenal. He started as an associate (he left a small-firm partnership) and within months was promoted. He was put up for partner the first year he was eligible. The thing that makes me super-proud of him is that he is an income partner rather than an equity partner; the career path is generally that equity partners are named managing but all three equities in his office suggested him (neither of the two remaining equities would be considered for various reasons.) He is an income partner supervising income partners senior to him as well as equity partners in the firm. They are showing a lot of faith in DH, and he deserves every little bit of it. I'm so darn proud of him right now.
