H and I have been planning on taking a trip for my 30th next April. A couple weeks ago and big boss in my company approached me about a possible promotion. I would have to interview for it but training is 12 weeks and starts in March, if I got the position there would be a 50/50 chance I couldn't take the week off in the middle of training.
So, the options that I see are:
A: Take the trip we were planning to take but take it earlier (January/February) then planned and just do something local on birthday (likely nice dinner and hot air balloon ride---have always wanted to do a balloon ride).
B: Continue to plan on taking the trip for actual birthday (and not book anything that isn't refundable) because 1: I may not even get the job to start with and 2: if I do get it they might let me take vacation time (they usually will if it is preplanned but I worry it will it look bad asking for time off during training).
Perhaps make a C plan 2-3 weeks later so as not to interfere with training. I have a March birthday and never minded a late celebration for better weather or options.
Why do you have to decide anything now? Can't you wait until you know if you have the job or not?
I considered this but I probably won't know anything until 2 ish weeks before job starts. At that point I figure it would be too late to book a 'before training starts' trip.

What kind of trip is it? Is it weather dependent, like it would be way better in April than in January? If not, I'd just go in January. If yes, then maybe wait & go in May?
