I've been using my new paperwhite lightly for a couple weeks now (ie. not having a lot of time to read), and I've been surprised at how quickly the battery has drained. Is this likely something that will get better, as in you have to fully drain it a couple of times thing? Has anyone had trouble with their kindle battery right off? And how long does your battery last and with what type of use?

My battery can last for a really long time. Like weeks I am guessing? Do you have 3G? My battery drains faster if I leave the 3G/wireless on. So I basically just keep it off unless I need it.
What the folks above said - check to see what light setting you have it on, I keep it fairly low. And check to see if your wifi or 3G are enabled, those can drain the battery pretty fast. Otherwise, I get hours and hours and hours of reading between charges. (paperwhite with 3G and wifi, but usually have 3G and wifi disabled)
dumb question, can you turn the backlight feature off? like if you want to read in the sunlight:?
Yes, you can turn of the light. It's not really a backlight, but more of a sidelight, though.
The kindle recommends using it's brightest setting in very well lit places, and a dimmer/darker setting for dark environments. I just leave mine on a fairly dark setting all the time, and it works fine.

I read probably 10 hours a week or so, like PP.
This is probably it. If I leave the 3G on, I get about a week out of it at most. So I put it in airplane mode and only turn it on when I want to go shopping. So far, I've gotten 3 weeks on a charge and it's still going strong.
