I don't mind van loads in, but I HATE them driving alongside during it. Cars need to stay off the roads unless necessary during TOT hours. And respect the porch light. Some of us have kids that go to bed early. And say thank you, especially teens.
I hope our new neighborhood is as good for TOT as it seems it should be. I need to go get more candy and fix our outside lights since we have a porch gas lamp now, no light.

We have a somewhat similar situation. There are literally 3 houses with kids in my neighborhood, but we get at least 250 TOTers each year. People pull in hayride-style trailers in and kids just pile off. Truthfully, I love it, and am going to look at what it costs on Amazon for bulk full-size candy bars.
The only time I get irritated in a "you don't even live here!" sort of way are the rude teenagers who don't dress up or do anything more than grunt as they shove their bag at me. The fact that they have no ties to the neighborhood just amplifies the irritation.

My old hood got enough of these that id call them out. Oh, you're too cool for a costume and too cool to say trick or treat but you aren't too cool to knock on my door. Mmmhmmmm. Weak.
And then they'd get one piece.
I answered the door in costume. Make an effort kids.
Teens that show up with obviously last minute funny costumes at 9 pm got half my bowl dumped in their bag.
Growing up my parents took my sisters & I to my grandparents' neighborhood because our neighborhood lacked sidewalks and street lights and we lived on a 50mph road... so not really safe for ToT. I guess we didn't deserve candy.
As a kid, our neighborhood was right before it got rural, so we always got a ton of kids bussed in, 200-300 was typical. My dad would just put on a witch hat and black robe and sit on the porch for a few hrs, loved seeing all the kids. My mom could have written the Pru letter, always complained.
To get to our house right now you go up a steep hill, turn right to another steep hill; and left onto our street. Our house is at the top of the hill. So yeah, no trick or treaters. We take C to ILs neighborhood, which is where we hope to move next year. Still has many olds there but they love seeing C (and how DH has grown up) and it will probably be a pretty young area again in 5-8yrs.

We're going to the beach condo for Halloween, but I think I should probably bring a bag of candy along just in case. And since there's a toll to get on the island, I can be guaranteed no mainland riff raff!
I kind of don't begrudge parents of babies who trick-or-treat in their own neighborhood. Friends and neighbors probably want to see the baby in costume. A pillowcase full of candy isn't necessary, but dammit, don't make me wait until I have a toddler to go ToTing again!
I know someone like this letter writer. He claims his neighborhood hands out bracelets for the kids that live there so they can tell who 'belongs' and who are drop-offs and they hand out the good stuff accordingly.
We moved to a more rural-ish area last year and we bought full-size candy bars to hand out and no one came (wilted)

We get a ton of ToTers. We live in a very large residential neighborhood set in a rural area. We already have a ton of kids in our neighborhood, but then people who live in rural areas in the community come here to ToT. We spend between $150 and $200 on candy and pass out every last piece.
We also get people from other communities. I don't think it's a big deal. ToT is a huge holiday for our neighborhood and a lot of fun. Tons of decorations, firepits on every driveway, beer and soda for the adults, people grill out. A total stranger offered me a dixie cup of apple pie moonshine one year I'm happy to spend more on candy if it means everyone has a good time.
I have a few grinchy neighbors though. This year ToT is on the 30th and people are pissed that "the others" will be coming here to take all our candy.

But this year it falls perfectly on a Friday night. Why did they move it to a less convenient night that is also NOT HALLOWEEN?
It's the high school football team's last game of the season against their big rival. Our neighborhood backs up to the high school and and the streets in our neighborhood are crowded with cars during football games. The township made the decision to move ToT as a safety precaution.

The football game should have been scheduled for the 30th. It's not like Halloween's date was a surprise to anyone.
Haha this is exactly what I thought when I read this! Seriously this is for the kids... Just give them the candy! If someone comes to my door, they get some candy or pretzels lol. We even have two separate allergy bowls for the non-peanut/gluten kids! Let kids have their fun. I would rather kids come to my safe neighborhood.

But you can't *move* trick or treating. It's like saying "OK because of scheduling conflicts, everyone should celebrate Christmas and open their presents on December 23rd this year." It just doesn't work that way. Trick or treating isn't a government-scheduled activity - you don't get to tell people when to do it.

This view is so strange to me...my area scheduled ToTing every year. If Halloween fell on like a Monday they'd announce in the papers that official ToT day was that Thursday. I never thought twice about it. though I remember there being heartburn about whether it should be Thursday or Friday. The theory was always that a Friday night the teens were more likely to get rowdy - whereas a Thursday kept the little kids separate from the big ones? I dunno.
IIOYredheadbaker is this just a berks thing? do other counties do this? @silver I'm pretty sure I asked this same question last year, but I don't remember the answer.
Here's the notice from a couple of years ago (I'm wondering if they stopped doing it since I can't find this years?)
You can see most of areas do actual Halloween, but some don't. This was a year that Halloween fell on a Monday so a couple of places moved it up to Thursday the 27th, other's did it Sunday the 30th.
I asked MH my first year down here when official ToT day would be and he looked at me like I'd lost my damned mind. "ummm, Halloween? Like every year?" was his answer.

I don't think Chester County does. I'm on my third township here and none of them have ever sent anything out. They will give official times (I think 8-11) but it's always on Halloween.
I know in VA where I went to school they would always schedule ToT for the middle of the day on the Saturday closest to Halloween so it was in daylight.

I've never heard of "moving" Halloween for any reason other than the year Sandy hit. "Trunk or Treat" makes me nearly roll my eyes out of my head.

My hometown's biggest football game is on the 31st as well, so the city moved ToT to Nov 1 (which is a lot weirder to me than moving it to Oct 30 for some reason.) This is a town where EVERYONE is at the game on Friday night, so there would be nowhere to ToT on the 31st anyway. Whatever. People will be unhappy either way.

I just found out last week that my town apparently won't be TorTing on Halloween. WTF? Combination of a football game (what moron schedules a football game on Halloween?) and police coverage because surrounding areas no longer have their own police force so they can't keep TorTers safe everywhere at once.
I'm pissed. Not only do they not advertise this shit to newcomers (is Christmas Dec 25th still or some arbitrary date?) but also because my kids have their cousin's birthday party that day (out of town, so they can't do both) and won't be here to TorT and I have work all weekend since it's the weekend before the election.
We're driving an hour and a half to my mom's to TorT and they're sad that they won't get to TorT with friends.
Bizarre and makes me feel less like this place could ever be called home.
This moving ToT thing is just so bizarre to me. What happens if you take your kids house to house on Halloween anyway? What if people just ignore the order or whatever it is? I just don't get how you can reschedule the entire point of a holiday.
