How do you respond when someone pays you a compliment? I used to respond with "thanks! I got it at Target (or wherever)." I've recently dropped the where I got it from because I didn't know if that was lame to always say. But just saying "thanks" seems lacking somehow. Hmmm ...

I say, "Thank you." Sometimes I repay a compliment but only if I really, really mean it. Otherwise I think that can seem hollow. If I got a great deal or if they are talking about my awesome kid, I might elaborate with a detail. Usually it's just thanking them.
Be a good receiver. I know that sounds hokey, but I started saying just "thank you," and it feels good to receive a compliment and not "deflect" it automatically.
I usually say something like "Oh, thank you! I got it at XYZ/that means a lot to me/I really appreciate that." I don't usually automatically compliment back unless I already it in my head because I end up sounding fake.

I usually smile awkwardly (because compliments make me feel weird because I'm a weirdo) and say thank you. If they're asking about an article of clothing I tell them where I got it.
It depends on the person for me. I have one friend that loves to bargain shop and we get a little competitive (all in fun). If she compliments, I'll brag about my savings (if it applies of course). For just about everyone else, I just say Thank You. I'm an expert at putting my foot in my mouth, so adding anything else can sound weird.
When people compliment me on how well behaved my children are, my knee jerk reaction is to look at them like they have three heads. I'm working on that one.
