He's in KINDERGARTEN. Punishment for not completing homework? Fuck that. No no no. There shouldn't even be much of anything to do at that point. We got one worksheet per WEEK for N, and it was more of a family learning deal. Like, find patterns in your house and draw them, or where do you see shapes around your house (and draw them) type of thing. And even that was sometimes hard to get N to do. Drills and busywork homework that's causing him to hate school? I'd honestly just ignore if it won't have a negative consequence for him at school (like they're not working towards a reward or something that not turning in homework would impact). And I'd let her know exactly what my thought process was on that, probably cc-ing the principal as well.
As for the other parts, I'd say it's largely a maturity issue. Kindergarteners are like a giant pack of kittens, and LOFL at her expecting them to all be self driven and motivated at this point.
GRRR, I'm in Mama Bear mode on your behalf. She's being ridiculous.
You are a legal secretary right? Maybe you should stick to typing and leave educating children to the people who have spent years in school learning how to do just that.

Today I learned that there are no misguided educators anywhere ever. Amen.
He is in private school, right? Have you had parent-teacher conferences yet?
I have been shocked by how much work is expected in Kindergarten. And how seemingly tough the Kindergarten teachers are. I was expecting more play time and fun, less rules. Finley is expected to a read a book aloud every evening, write a couple sentences about said book, have a book read aloud to her, go through ~100 flash card sight words and do a couple sheets of homework each night during the week. It is a lot. Kindergarten was essentially a half day of play when I was in school and the expectations are so much higher now.
That's how I feel too, LHC, but I'm wondering if I'm babying him?
You are not. Honestly, knowing your "parenting type" over the years I could not imagine you coddling your kids. You seem pretty stern - in a good way.
An email is not a place to express that she feels like you need to speak with a fucking doctor about your kid. If she had half a brain she would request a conference if she was truly concerned about that.
She is also a fucking moron for suggesting punishment for not doing homework fast enough. That is the quickest way to suck the joy out of learning.
And FUCK HER again for "hinting" about holding him back in email; once again, that is a face to face conversation. Not to mention it isn't even Christmas break yet. Kids can change in the course of a week.

It looks like this teacher knows lot's and lot's about teaching little kids.

All those years in school and the teacher still sucks at grammar. I doubt this lady was at the top of her class, nor is she a psychologist. She learned how to teach. I would hope that any ACTUAL judgements on his readiness to go to first grade would involve a school psychologist because they would be the ones who went to school to learn about psychological disorders and child development.
As far as I know, they don't allow teachers to diagnose children with ADD so let's dial it back a bit here.

Are you drunk again?
Yes. I am drunk in my office at 1:45 in the afternoon. I sympathize with teachers who have to deal with parents who can't except that their "perfect" little minion may not be.....perfect. She asked a question and was given an honest answer. I'm sorry if the truth hurts but the outrage over the teacher is ridiculous.

Look, every other time you've posted, you've been an asshole, and I thought it was because you were always drunk. But now I've learned that you're just an asshole, regardless of your BAC.

Maybe to much.
It would be too much genius. I'm not a teacher. You couldn't pay me enough to do that job b/c of parents like you people.

The implication that Stella is one of those parents is really cracking me up. No.

I'd be outraged if the person teaching my child kindergarten basics wasn't able to write properly.
I would also be annoyed if she suggested my kid had ADD when they are a 5 year old boy.
Stella's wasn't given an honest answer. She was told a load of crap by someone who doesn't seem to understand kindergarten boys.

I know, like have a clue who you are talking about.

I don't know Stella but based on this thread....yeah she is one of those.
As a Kindergarten teacher I cannot get past her grammar errors.
I know you mentioned he's in Catholic school. Here that would mean that the teacher does not need to be a certified teacher. I'm wondering how much education and experience she has with early childhood? It seems like she is following along with programs and doesn't know how to appropriately differentiate.
She's been teaching K for 30 years. I thought that was a good sign but now... (Shrug)

Ugh RITE? Effing parents and their effing expectations that teachers be reasonable and developmentally appropriate when dealing with they're little rug rats. AND not sound like uneducated flakes when addressing a concern with their child. Intitled assholes. All of them.
This makes me so angry. I have only read the first page, so sorry if I am missing lots of info. We don't have homework or formal learning in K here, it is still just used as a "getting used to being in school year". They learn reading and math in grade 1. And my 7 yo 1st grader refuses to focus for more than 15 minutes of homework, and I think that is totally normal.
Also, maybe the teacher should be held back a year if she can't spell.
