I usually get my mom a few sweaters and shirts because she can always use those. Sometimes something scrapbooking related because she enjoys that too. For my sister, clothes or anything penguin related because she's obsessed. For MIL, I pretty much just go in on whatever H wants to get her (or a joint gift for FIL too like their TV last year). Unfortunately I don't do a lot of gift exchanging with friends, usually just cards. BFF and I will usually get something small for each other. Last year I got her some wine and a wine topper and she made some framed scrapbook pages for me. One of them had her MOH speech
Last year I got my sister a naked eyeshadow palette, and she loved it! So far I got her a new phone case. Clothes are good. Mani/pedi gift cards.
I usually get my mom clothes.
My sister usually gets me something kitchen related. I have the white dishes from pottery barn, so every year she'll get me a new serving piece or accessory.
My friends I like to get those Alex and Ani bracelets.
My mom has lost a lot of weight this year (divorce diet, would not recommend) so I'm giving her a VS gift card to buy a nice new bra and then a nice sweater or blouse. Normally for mom and MIL I will buy scarves/wraps, jewelry, and makeup or fragrance.
For my SILs, I will either do jewelry or unnecessary but fun home goods stuff like cute kitchen towels from Anthropologie or nice entertaining/bar ware from West Elm.
I go by the rule "would I like this?" so basically I shop for myself and then gift it
MIL: We normally do a joint gift for her and FIL as of right now. I am sure that will change once we have more disposable income. I always get them the latest book of the author they like.
Sisters: We draw names in our family. We all make lists. It is required lol. So I normally pick something on the list and get them something girlie. Mani/pedi, facials etc
Generic; Mani/Pedi Gift card, Spa gift card, scarves, candles, scrapbooking stuff, cozy blankets, photo frames
I always give my mom a German Shepherd calendar, along with random things like kitchen gadgets, scarves, picture frames, sweaters, blankets, etc. This year I'm giving her new nightgowns from Lands' End, oven mitts from Williams Sonoma, and a new DVD player because her old one barely works.
My MIL is hard to shop for because she seems to have everything she needs already. This year she asked for a new slow cooker, so that was easy. In past years we've given her a purse, perfume, earrings, kitchen stuff, framed photos of us, charms for her bracelet, and restaurant giftcards.
For my sister, I give giftcards, purses, clothes, books. She is picky with clothes, but sometimes I manage to find something she really likes.
MIL is very picky and doesn't want stuff, so well do a joint giftcard for her and FIL, probably a restaurant, gas station, or similar. They're currently traveling in a trailer all winter so those make sense for them. It'll be easy to mail to them too.
My mom wants some new bakeware. I love the Gold Touch ones from williams-Sonoma so I'll prob get her those. May also pay for some drinks, an excursion, or something on our cruise we're going on with them. Oh and obligatory family photos and photo calendar.
I think we're just buying for SIL's kids, the other SIL we'll send a giftcard since we won't see her this year.
Not totally sure for my grandmother yet. I've bought her perfume before, or framed photos, or decorative items.
I got my mom a Coach purse on super sale. She never buys anything expensive for herself so I can't wait to give it to her. She loves to bake so I get her kitchen stuff most years. I think I am getting her the Skinnytaste cookbook this year.
For my three SILs, I get things like scarves, necklaces or whatever is on their Elfster lists.
I never know what to get MIL. Hopefully we'll get some good ideas when we visit.
My friends and I don't exchange, but this year I am going to suggest to my BFF that we plan a fun girls' night each January as our gift--something bigger than usual. Maybe a play or a winery or something.
This year I'm getting my mom a new flat iron and a calendar she wanted and making her biscotti (I make her these every year). MIL is getting a ticket to see Trans Siberian Orchestra (as is step FIL), some snowman placemats and some snowmen for her collection. Step MIL is getting a ticket to see Trans Siberian Orchestra (as is FIL) and biscotti (she also gets these every year).
SIL wanted either a toaster or blender (she's 21 and stocking up on house stuff for when she moves out), so we are getting her a blender. My best friend is getting a Target gift card (her favorite store) and some yarn, because she just took up knitting.
My sisters are getting eyeshadow palettes. I haven't decided yet for my mom or stepmom. And I'll wait until we draw names for my H's side of the family before thinking about MIL or SIL. I already got my niece a cute pair of shoes.
