If it gets cold and snowy where you live, what coat do you wear for warmth and snow protection? Also, how do you size your coats? Do you leave lots of room under for layers?
I have a North Face coat that I love. Keeps me warm and protects from the snow. I bought it in my regular size and still have plenty of room underneath for a chunky sweater and layering a scarf.
It's -4 here right now. I have a a North face coat that goes down past my butt with a hood. It's high fill down. I have it in my regular size and usually wear a lightweight sweater with it. It's a tad snug though through the chest. Today I wore it with skinny jeans, Sorel boots, a blanket scarf and wooly hat. I was fairly warm.
I have a puffy Eddie Bauer one that I love and comes in colors other than black or brown, which for me is important, lol. I find that the coats run a bit bigger anyway, so I got what would be my "normal" size which allows plenty of room for layers still.
I wear winter boots to the fuction and carry a boot bag and my dress shoes in a black leather tote. While at the party, I put the snowy boots in the boot bag and then the tote that way the wet snow does not damage the leather. Most function rooms in our area have a coat check room and the tote and my coat go into the coat check room.

No, I am talking about a down/water repellant jacket.
I have a down-alternative coat with a deep hood and a furry collar so I don't have to wear a scarf (they always itch). It has ribbed cuffs, too, which I like so that snow doesn't go down my sleeve when I'm clearing off my car. I went up one size so I can fit layers underneath.
I have a black puffy, down coat from Columbia Sportswear with a hood that I wear most days. I sized up to layer underneath it. I have a wool coat from Nordstrom if it's dry and cold out and I want to be a little dressier.
I am finally replacing a cheapie Target puffer that finally fell apart last year (it did last over 6 years however!) and i'll prob be getting a North Face.
