We have barred rocks, which are a cold-hardy breed, but it's supposed to get to -15 tonight and I've been worried sick that they would freeze in their coop. DH came home with a wardrobe box, which we set up in the garage, and lined with bedding and a perch.
Gretchen is a big baby and squawked at me when I picked her up, but Ruth and Stella were pretty chill about the whole thing. It's about 32 in our garage right now, so hopefully they're feeling significantly warmer already. I'm feeling so much better about being a chicken owner now. lol
OMG! Is that Gretchen in the front? lol, she looks miffed!
Yes! lol
She's pretty much never happy with anything. Also happens to be the biggest and quite a scaredy cat.
Stella is on the right at the back. She's the bravest and is fine with being petted and held for the most part.
Ruth is an escape artist and is developing a strong personality. She's pretty feisty, but still mellow around us. DH thinks she's at the bottom of the pecking order.
Apparently, I like these chickens more than I thought.

They're so cute:) You're a good chicken mom!
DH is a good chicken dad, too. He made them warm oatmeal for breakfast this morning. Maybe it's the pregnancy hormones, but I totally melted when he texted me he did that. lol
The best part of all this is the damn birds haven't given us any eggs yet! We've had them since late July. They were born late in the season, so will lay late, and this cold isn't helping anything. Still, I'll be pretty pumped when we finally get an egg or two.
Barred rocks are the best! Glad they are toasty tonight. It's not as cold here, so they got a nice bedtime snack of cracked corn.
I gave them the last of the mealworms we had and some tomatoes last night, but they barely touched them. Too cold, I think. DH said they liked the oatmeal he made them this morning. They were pretty interested in their regular food once we got them in the garage.
"Why would you ruin perfectly good peanuts by adding candy corn? That's like saying hey, I have these awesome nachos, guess I better add some dryer lint." - Nonny

Do you have barred rocks, too?
We do! They are awesome, albeit not nearly as afraid of the dog as they should be. Our older Americauna's are friendlier, but they were raised as pets unlike our younger chickens. The Barred Rocks are more skittish of us, but wouldn't be if they were raised the same as the others.
