Hmm. Need to go do my final anniversary sale returns. I'm embarrassed how much I've returned -- but I mostly shopped online and cast a wide net. The Melissa Trapuntos went back right away -- didn't like the streaks of color.
I keep thinking these ought to go back, but I'm hesitating. I like them when I try them on, but when I look at a picture, they look a little young for a 34 year old SAHM. When I do an image search for inspiration for these boots, almost all of the pics are of Miley Cyrus. Bit of a red flag.
I'm keeping two other pairs of short boots from the sale -- black Clarks and brown Aldos. I love them, but those have a heel and I wonder how comfy they'll truly be for running around the park with kids.
The Veronica boot is very wide on me, even on tightest setting. While that makes it very easy to move in, I don't want to look like a pirate.
I do get returning remorse sometimes, though. One of my first returns from the sale was the Tory Burch in brown -- I thought the gold buckle was too blingy for me, but now I miss them. I have issues!
I wear moto boots and I'm older than you but mine are black and fairly plain with smooth leather. I love them. They are great with skinnies in winter with thick socks chasing my kiddos around and I get a lot of compliments on them.
I returned a lot from the sale too but love my Trapunto boots. I got the black ones though and they are true black with no streaking and I am more than a little in love with them. I want a pair of dark brown boots but can't find any I really like other than the Melissa back zip and they are much money I am still trying to decide on which short boots to keep.
I returned the Trampuntos too. The leather "distressing" was awful, looked like they got left in the rain. Plus the fit well in the calf but the ankles were super baggy.
I have a pair of boots from Aldo that are similar to the Veronica. I like them, but I don't wear them a whole lot so the Aldo price worked. I find them hard to style without looking like I am trying to re-live my early 1990s teenage self. Although, I do refuse to give up my Doc Martens.

FWIW - the Tory Burch boots are really uncomfortable. I kept them...but am still debating it.
As for the short boots, if you don't love them, and it sounds like you don't really, I'd take them back. For that price, you should like them a lot more. And it sounds like you like the Aldo ones a bit more.
As for being too old - I'm 38 and I'm pretty sure I could rock a motorcycle boot. I wouldn't worry about age.
