I'd like to get DD (4) a nice dollhouse as her big gift for christmas. I'm not looking for one of those little fisher price plastic ones that she had when she was little. I did a search on the boards and I didn't see a lot of chatter about dollhouses.
Santa brought DD1 a KidKraft when she was 3. She loved it and played with it a ton. Now that she is 8 she uses it as a place to store books and her AG dolls. DD2 is almost 3 and will be getting her own for Christmas. It took us an hour or two to put it together IIRC.
I asked this same question about 3 weeks ago. We are going with the kidcraft one per most suggested on here and my own research. It seems sturdy but not to heirloom to play with and has good pricing.
@justdairy, weird that I didn't see your post. I think we're looking at similar dollhouses. I'm definitely wanting one to go in her room to keep safe from her brothers when they start crawling by this summer.
Thanks ladies, it looks like the kidkraft ones get enough love that I can safely get one of those. Here's hoping for an awesome BF sale.

We have had this one since DD was 2. We got it for less than this price. It comes fully furnished. DD still plays with it several times a week. She has enjoyed decorating it and frequently changes around the layout. I am not sure she would get so much enjoyment, especially at 8, with a dollhouse that was already decorated and defined. At 6-7 years old, we let her upgrade the furniture to finer quality, more fragile furniture. The furniture it comes with is great for younger kids, since it is very sturdy. We use it in DS's castle for his knights.
