I think I need to stop being stingy and just go for it, but what do you ladies think?
My sister is getting married over Labor Day weekend, and I'm wondering if I should get my makeup professionally done? I am horrible with makeup (as in, I don't wear anything, except MAYBE blush and some mascara on special occasions), but I want to look nice for my sister's wedding.
Should I go for it and get my makeup done by a professional? She's really good (charges $100 for makeup and false lashes, but since she is a friend of my sister, she said it'd be $75 total).
Yes, do it. Is she willing to give you a trial beforehand? So that you can see what you like/don't like?
You know, I didn't ask. The wedding is back in my hometown (no. Ohio), and we'll be so busy all weekend I don't even know when we could fit in a trial.
I've seen her website, and the makeup looks good though...

It's a little more than I'd want to spend, but I'd do it too. Especially since you say that you're not big on wearing makeup as-is. It's just better left in her hands. I'm sure you'll look great!
Yes. Do it! I had a mu artist do my makeup and my pictures came out awesome. I asked MIL if she wanted to have her makeup done and she declined. When we got our photos she said she looked so washed out but I looked awesome. :-)
I did have a trial a month or so beforehand so that I could tweak the look by the time the wedding rolled around. I was a little nervous because the makeup looked kind of heavy but it needed to be for the photos. Best money spent during the wedding ever.
Cran, you must have a trial with the mua beforehand. To see how good s/he is, and also I am wary of mua because they tend to do a geisha/Suzie Wong thing on Asian women if they don't know what they hell they're doing, especially the eye makeup.
I had a mua for my wedding and it was so worth it for the pictures and how it looked in person.
This exactly. I feel like MUA almost need special training on Asian eyes since we're so different b/c of our monolid. I'll see if she can do a trial beforehand....

I don't know if you were ever on The Knot, but you can post on your local board asking for recommendations. My friend was recently married & she is Korean. She was also worried, so she asked for recommendation from Asian brides. She found one & looked absolutely stunning.
Cab- You always looks fabulous, and I wish you COULD do my make up. And yes, she will also be doing my sister's and I believe (??) she'll do a trial with her before the actual wedding day.
Mrssavvy- Did she just go back to her local board on The Knot and just ask for makeup style recommendations from Asian brides?

This was a few months ago when we were both still planning our weddings. She just posted "MUA for Asian Girls" and then asked if any Asian brides or now wives had experience with good MUAs. One girl responded with pics from her engagement shoot & she booked a trial with the girl. If you live in the Northern NJ area, I could ask the info.

Definitely not in NJ But I will go back to the boards and ask. Thanks!

There's a Chicago makeup artist known for great makeup skills with Asian brides (she was even voted best MUA in Instyle before) Here is her website so you can see some of her styles (she has photos on FB, too)

Another vote for do it! There was a big difference in the pics from my wedding from the girls who did their own make up and those who got theirs done with me. It's such a long day, and regular makeup fades quick, but if it's professionally done, especially airbrush it has much better staying power and photographs better.
I totally vote do it. I paid for all my girls to have my make-up done (including the moms too) and I don't regret it. I'd pay for it to be in someone else's wedding too. So much less stress the morning of too.
I think you should do it since you said you don't do it a lot on yourself usually. Have fun with it!
That said, I had my makeup done for my wedding and was REALLY disappointed in how it turned out. We had done a trial, and there were very specific things that I asked to be tweaked, and it just wasn't what I had signed up for. Basically, it ended up looking like a very blah version of me, and I felt I could have done it better myself. After she left, I had to touch it up and add more foundation, blush, eye shadow and liner, because it looked like I barely had any on.
The same chick did my hair, and it looked like crap. She blamed it on my haircolor (I kid you not). I could curl my own hair without any product and it would have come out better than what she did.
She was very "reputable" and highly praised on TK, and went bat shit crazy on me after I posted my review of her work. Since then, her company has gone down the tubes after getting more bad reviews.
I will say that my BMs who had different MUAs and hair ladies all looked awesome, so its possible! LOL
Yes, definitely do it! You'll be in so many family photos, you'll want to look extra special. I almost didn't book a MUA for myself but am so glad I did. She's Hawaiian so I think she'll be great working with my skin tone.
This just makes me extra annoyed with the make up artist for my wedding--I used the one that worked at the salon where my hair hair stylist worked because it was convenient. I told her I was totally cool with bold make up (my eyes are really deep set and it's hard to overdue make up)
So she did super neutral make up, didn't know how to put on false eye-lashes! (my sister is good at it at least) and no lipstick samples for me to take with me to apply later or any for purchase. So I was at CVS buying lipstick, ha!

Bimbi, who did your makeup?
You can pm if you don't want to say the vendors name here. My friend is getting married and Sonia isn't in her price range and I want to know if she looked into your artist.

I got married in Minneapolis, where is your friend getting married?
I say yes just because I think it's sounds like a nice way to treat yourself.
I totally wish I had a MUA at my own wedding. I took advice from the wrong people regarding my MU and I think i didn't look good or at least not like myself.
