I know this has been asked a million times before, but I want to put a ring sling on my Christmas list. My plan is to use it to carry DD to daycare (~5 min walk) when she's too big to stuff in the k'tan.
Any recommendations? Or features that are nice to have? Or preferred fabrics?

I'm glad you posted this! I have a Rockin' Baby that I borrowed from a friend but I'm so intimidated by it. Does anyone know of a great youtube video with idiot proof instructions? I'm hoping to bring it on our trip.
I have the Sakura bloom in linen. It's not particularly soft but it's lighter for warm weather than some of the softer and more expensive fabrics. I like it but it's just ok. I wouldn't not get it again but Im not raving about it or anything.

Sakura Bloom has great instruction videos on YouTube. I watched them to make sure I was smart enough for a ring sling before I registered for one.

That's good to know; I was looking at the Sakura Bloom since it gets pretty hot here from May-Sept. But it seems to have mixed reviews, which is too bad because it does look gorgeous.
Pretty much everything will have mixed reviews. User error accounts for much of it. Sakura Bloom is a good brand - expensive for what it is, though.
Ugh, I know, and my problem is I get so caught up on the bad reviews that I have a really hard time choosing one. So I end up reading a million reviews of a million different products.
Of course, now I want the sleeping baby productions sling, which is not a very practical option for a gift since it sounds like you get a 1-2 hour window every month to order.

I managed to get a SBP one this past winter. I love it, very well made and great price. I just kept refreshing her site every day for a month time consuming but worth it.
I have a Comfy Joey linen ring sling that I bought second hand. It's nice and has been exactly what I wanted - one layer, unpadded shoulder. It's nice and cool in the summer and folds up really small to be stored in my diaper bag. It's not the best for long hauls since it's unpadded, but for my needs (and it sounds like yours) it would be perfect.

LOL, just follow her on Facebook and she posts when her shop openings are. If you know what you want, it's not THAT hard to get it. This next opening is it until after Christmas, though.
I have a Maya RS that I love. You definitely want a pocket, and I would suggest not getting one with a padded shoulder. I've never used one but haven't heard much positive about the padded shoulders.
i love my sakura bloom linen. i use almost every day.
i really want a silk one for future kids.
How old/big is your kid? I used my (hand-me-down) SB sling a ton between 3 and 4 months and really loved how easy and lightweight it was. But then I realized I was physically wiped at the end of the day and my shoulders/back were killing me. I put DD in it again yesterday and it still hurt. I see big babies in slings all the time, so am I doing something wrong?

she's almost 1 ( ) and probably somewhere around 23lbs? i had the issue with my shoulders/back killing me for awhile, too, and i could not figure out why it wasn't working for me. i spent a lot of time really watching the youtube videos of putting the sling on and realized i wasn't creating a true pocket for her to sit in. i was pulling it under her butt but she wasn't really IN the sling, it was just under her. (i am doing an absolutely horrible job of explaining this lol!)
ok. let me try again. go watch some videos, and really pay attention to creating like a hammock for the baby to sit IN, not just pulling the sling under your kid.
please. somebody come in here and explain this better than me!
oh. and also, spread out the fabric over your back and shoulder. that helped SO MUCH with weight distribution. now i can carry her fo-eva and it doesn't hurt at all.
Ok I'll do this again. I watched a bunch of videos and thought I had it right but now that I think about it, I'm kind of just sticking the fabric under her butt. I do spread the fabric across my back and shoulders at least.
It should be snug enough that the weight transfers to your torso rather than just hanging the baby off your shoulder. It will still hurt after a while (carrying a baby is work!), but it should be longer than you could carry in-arms, for sure. Getting it pretty tight and keeping the kid really close to my body helps a lot.
Ring sling is my carrier of choice for between 1-2 years and in the very beginning.

I'm my own worst enemy.
I have a SBP sling I bought in April that I have used 3x. I'll send it to you if you'd like. It's sea-foam green with blue rings.
