Is there a way to do a semi-permanent hem that can be taken out? My friend gave me her maternity clothes, which fit well, but the pants are all way too long. She's a decent bit taller than I am. I don't want to ruin them by dragging them on the ground, but I also want to be able to give these clothes back to her so she can wear them if she gets pregnant again.
I've used hem tape before, but that seems like it might leave a residue or something. Is there an idea I'm not thinking of?
You should first find out if she's expecting them back. If she is it may be worthwhile to just get your own pants.
I'm pretty sure she will and I wouldn't feel right permanently altering them even if she says she doesn't care.
I'm currently using a belly band with my regular pants. I'm being so cheap about this stuff and really don't want to buy pants that I'm only going to wear for another 4-5 months. I will if I have to, but I was hoping someone might have a suggestion for how to make these work.

You can get maternity pants on the walmart website for $20. There is no way to put in a temp hem that won't make the fabric fade weird. Especially with lots of washings.
Dude, 4-5 months is a LONG time. Maybe spring for some Old Navy pants or something. Keep things to $100 if that suits your cheap bone. Online has good deals, but in store usually has a decent clearance section.
Keep in mind that you will be wearing them for at least a month PP too.
Well how much need to be hemmed? I mean, as long as you don't cut the fabric you can hem them up and then just remove the stitching when you give them back. They also make iron on hem tape. I have used it but never tried to remove it though so I don't know if it leaves a residue or anything.
I got 90% of my maternity clothes at a local consignment shop-- they specialized in kids clothes but had racks of maternity as well. May be worth looking to see if there is something similar in your area? I hated spending the money on maternity clothes too.

Motherhood pants aren't that expensive. If you're petite, the Old Navy maternity pants run longer than their regular ones. I learned this the hard way and now I have some $30 jeans that are 5 inches too long for me that are mail return only.
