Yes, it's basically an expensive Polaroid (but in a paper envelope/frame). I haven't seen any emailed, but we've been going to the same place for the past 3 years. I always dress up the girls. I've ended up in the photo 2/3 times and I just wore jeans and a nice top.

We did ours at the mall today (the ones on my fb are from a church thing).
I paid $16 for one 5x7 and four 4x 8. We got a free cookie and a free baby's first Christmas ornament. I know there is another mall here that is free. There was an option to buy the image on the disc but that was $22. I also got a $10 shutterfly gift card with it.
We take DD to Nordstrom for Santa pics, and we've had the same guy every year. I think we pay $27 for 2 5x7photos. They get mailed to us and each photo comes in a nice black holder/frame thingy.
We were a little stupid and shelled out for the "first Christmas" package last year. I think there was a 5x7, two 4x6s, a picture ornament, and a digital download. I believe it was $40ish? They weren't great quality but we figured why not shell out for the first Christmas pics. AJ wore Christmas jammies that my friend had given me for him.
This year, we are NOT doing that. We're definitely snapping pics at Breakfast with Santa at J's work in two weeks, and depending on how he does we may do more pics at the mall that lets you take your own pics (the one we went to last year is militant about not letting people take their own pics).

Exactly this. I've taken DS the past. 2 years and ended up in the photo b/c, well...sitting in a stranger's lap is scary! Our town does it at town hall. They have a photo printer and print out a single 4x6 photo from the photographer. I dress up DS.
I'm not sure we're going to do it this year TBH. Last 2 years DS has been TERRIFIED. We stand in line for at least an hour, to be on Santa's lap for 2 minutes max. Maybe we just have a sucky Santa?
Another Bass Pro Shop fan. They also let you use your own camera. If you have any local independent toy stores, sometimes they have a Santa come in. One by us brings Santa and a professional photographer in one night only. All pics are emailed to you for free. Only cost is a $10 registration fee returned to you via store credit to cut down on no shows.

The way our mall works, kid sits with Santa, they take a few pictures. You pick the one you like best, and you can buy from a range of packages. Almost all of the packages include the option of going to a website to download a digital version.
