Yes. You read that correctly. DH doesn't know how to spell his name. His middle name is after his dad's first name. It is a name with two common spellings-one with one L and one with two Ls. He's said several times casually he "wasn't sure" how it was spelled but at the end of the day, I thought it was just lip service and he knew it was spelled with one L-just like his dad's. Well, FIL gave us his cc to go out to dinner last night and I looked at it and FIL's name on the card was spelled with two Ls. I said to DH "I thought your middle name had one L?!??" He said "I did too!!!!"
So after 14 years with him, and after 40 years of living, we have no clue whether DH's middle name has one L or two Ls (or how FIL's name is spelled for that matter!!)
Out half of the mystery will be solved tomorrow when i dig out DH's birth certificate to see. I'm hoping it's the one L since that's how I've always filled out forms for DH-taxes, marriage certificate, kids birth certificates!!
Update: it's Philip. I checked his birth certificate this morning. It's not on his DL, I grabbed that from him when I saw his dad's cc. He has SS card and passport but they're in the safe, so he wouldn't see them regularly enough to notice. I have no clue how he wasn't sure. That part baffles me too!! Now I wonder how his dads name is spelled. I'm reasonably certain it is the same, which would make sense, but do credit card companies often misspell names? And knowing his dad, there's no doubt in my mind if it was misspelled he would have them correct it. Too bad I don't like his dad well enough to figure it out!!!

DH doesn't know how to spell his middle name either! He insisted for years that it was Nathanial. We needed his birth certificate for something and lo and behold, it was spelled correctly as Nathaniel. The Air Force still has it wrong because of how he filled out his initial paperwork. Now he always asks me how to spell it if he needs it on a form because he can't remember which way it is.

My sister's middle name is Renea (I'm pretty sure, lol). I remember mom having to pull out the birth certificate to check the spelling when she registered her for school...

Has he never seen his birth certificate? Does he just forget? I don't understand how this happens. I can see how it happens with someone else's name, but not your own name.
In high school, my boyfriend's sister's name was Jennifer Dee. Except when she went needed her birth certificate for something it was Jennifer Delores. Turns out their parents argued about the middle name and dad just lied to mom when he filled out the form. I guess on your 8th kid you don't double check the forms anymore.

Something similar happened to my grandma. She got through her entire life thinking her middle name was Eilleen (yes, with 2 Ls). When she filed for social security, she found out it was Yvonne. She ended up legally changing it to Eilleen.
I let people spell both my first and middle name however they want since there are two accepted spellings for each (first with a single or double consonant , middle with an "I" or a "y"), but I definitely know how they legally appear on all forms of my identification and its consistent on my drivers license, passport, etc.
And my middle name is after my godmother, who spells it with an "I" while I spell it with a "y," so that's not too terribly weird to me. It's just weird to not know.

That is so funny. I just game to post on the randoms thread (but now I have this tread instead) how I asked DH this morning if his sister, whom I've never met, is Clare or Claire. He said he didn't know, he'd have to look it up. WTH, DH, you've had 41 years to learn how to spell your sister's name!! Lol, lurknomore, your DH is worse!
crazygame, the accent will be on the e that says "a" like, and if there are two e's at the end, it will be on the first. EX: RenEe, AmElie, (caps where the accent would be)
It is spelled wrong on our wedding invite. We realized it was spelled wrong when we got Dh birth certificate to get our marriage license (2 ls and an e)
We are a family of no middle names. CC companies often insert an "X" as a middle initial for us over the years. Heck even one of the companies my husband worked for, a giant bank, created his work email as FirstName.X.LastName@bank.com and he had no way of changing the fact that X is not part of his name.

The doctor who delivered me filled out my birth certificate (my mom was groggy from the C-section meds). They told him that my name was Colleen. But the doctor spelled it with only one L. They never checked it before he submitted it, and didn't realize my name was spelled "wrong" until they went to register me for first grade.
So, this happened to me with my middle name. My whole life I thought it was 2 "L" (Michelle). Send out wedding invites and my mom calls because middle name is wrong - apparenrky it only has 1 L - Michele.
My passport was fine because my mom had sent the application in previously. A lot of other things only asked middle initial.
I swear no one had ever corrected me, or didnt notice or something. Like WTF?!

My dad doesn't have a middle name, and on a form years ago he wrote "none" where it asked for middle name. He still gets junk mail addressed to FirstName N. Lastname.
My SIL & brother are getting divorced..,in the list of stuff they are dividing up she has his name next to stuff that is his in parentheses. It's handwritten & spelled Aruther every single time. They've been married 12 years & Arthur isn't exactly hard to spell. Guess he was pretty hurt (add it to the list) that she didn't even care enough to know how to spell his FIRST name.
I had a boyfriend named Neil, and his Dad used to always give him birthday gifts, Christmas presents, etc and spell his name "Neal". It drove him crazy lol...
