Or give me an idea what I am supposed to be looking at to help me decide.
Ds is 8 months and 16 pounds and I am starting to think we might want to consider getting a convertible as the infant seat is getting heavy to lug around. And it's kind of a pain to get him in and out of seat while it's in the car.
Any help would be appreciated as I'm just not sure what to get at all.
Is your kid short/average/tall? What kind of car do you have?
I think he's average on size right now, but he was a preemie and has been catching up on chart. I've got a jeep grand Cherokee so I should have plenty of space to work with as needed.
do you need a convertible for your spouse too? What is your budget?
I really love our Maxi Cosi Pria 70. Easy to install, can RF til 40lbs or 40in standing, FF weight limit is 70lbs and 52in I believe. Everything adjusts really easily and the cover comes off and washes up beautifully and is easy to put back on. It is really plush and comfy as well. The Pria 85 just came out with strap holders and I may get that for our next kid, expiration on it is 10 years so it lasts a looooong time.

The best seat is the one that fits your car and your kid and that you can install correctly. That said, I figured out what I wanted by reading tons of posts here. @fivedogs is the expert, and even though I didn't follow her advice ;-) I learned tons from her posts. Before and during my research, I went to BBB and strolled the carseat aisles several times. If the seat is installed correctly, and fits your child, they should all be safe, so it's more what are you looking for as far as bells and whistles, etc. I loved (and still love) the Clek Foonf which is $$$$$ -- way more money than is necessary to spend. I personally didn't like the "cocoon-y" type of seats and the ones that had lots of cracks and crevices for dirt. But to each her own. You may also want to practice strapping and unfastening the straps in the store to get a sense of what you want. Some board favorites are the Nextfit, Diono Radian, and I think it's the new Graco myride 65 that is getting good reviews?
I'll do it until at least 2 and reevaluate at that time.
Right now I'm just getting back from a road trip with lots of driving so I'm not a big fan of rear facing. I am posting from the backseat of a truck. But since it's safer for him. ill reevaluate when I'm not stiff and tired.
I think the Graco 4 Ever is the new popular seat, getting really good reviews. Radians, Nextfits, Foonfs, and Prias are pretty popular on here. Britax seats not so much although I believe the new click tight ones can rear face longer.

I
No idea on budget yet. I thought I'd get some ideas and then start watching for deals. Probably not the most expensive, nor the cheapest.
We don't need one for dh truck as we rarely take it, but we may want to pick up something inexpensive for my mil's car as she watches ds a couple days a week and likes to take him to the park.

I personally really like our Graco 4ever. Its got high RF limits, 10 year expiration, and can be a highback booster and a backless booster. We won't need any other seat for DD2.
