I would be thrilled to get your perk as my gift, and it is the same difference as you paying cash for it, you are sacrificing those points. You could use those points on something else for yourself.
So you would use your points to get your SS gift? Sure, why not?
One year I spent a shitton on my AmEx for work related stuff when they had triple points. I redeemed them for a bunch of gift cards from AmeEx points and used those gift cards for birthday/wedding/shower presents the whole next year.
Not weird...I feel like it is a win-win. The person gets what they want, you got something out of it (from your original purchase that gave you points)...everyone is happy!

Yes, but the items are often packaged in a way that you KNOW it's a perk - so, someone would be like "Oh cool, a beauty insider box of goodies!" LOL. I mean, I could repackage, but they're usually not full size, or items only offered as perks. It'd be obvious.
Still, I have to say sure why not? They are getting something that they want, you are getting them something they want. Win/win!
Free/perk does not equal ungiftable.
I will admit that my perception of this is a bit skewed since my dad was an MD and until he retired we always got all kinds of random stuff he got from the drug reps wrapped up by him at Christmas (desk clocks, padfolios, key chains, etc.) and even now, mom and dad will get freebies when they travel and they bring them home to us. Last trip my "freebie gifts" included a cool scarf, some powdered lemongrass and a curry spice mix.
