Is goldie part of your local board? I want to know what special brand of hate sludge she's going to spew.
yup, she is. she actually spewed less hate than others on our local board. She did like lots of their posts but on this issue she has been surprisingly quiet. There was lots of "I wont' be sympathetic to people who riot and hurt their own people," "I am so worried for the police (during the protests)," and just general head in the sand with regards to the bigger issues here. The line was pretty much GOP locals=agree with the indictment and no sympathy for the other issues, while the dems who spoke were concerned about the big picture. I am not saying I think that's how it is on CEP but that is definitely how it was on the local board lauren and i are a part of. I am starting to really question whether people are truly uneducated, if they are unwilling to look at the issues, or if they are just plain racist. I think it's a combo of the latter 2.
or even better, "as someone who pays their salaries, I want the police to protect themselves."
I got a "Most people wouldn't even go into the neighborhoods that my husband has to patrol"
Ha! I used to work in the neighborhood where this happened and I am white as can be. Even with all the blahhhhhhh people around...nope, not scary. Actually, the scariest part were all the guys from the halfway-house next door and those guys were a very diverse group.
What is really strange to me is that the same friends/family I have that are stockpiling their guns for when Obama turns the military and police against the general population are also on the side of the police/government/justice system in these cases. I'm not sure how they can reconcile that in their mind.
Ditto. It's so confusing to me! Back in august when the police were essentially going to war against the community I just felt like shouting, look at what is happening here! Isn't this what all your pro-gun 2nd amendment stuff you post is alluding to? Well here you go! It's happening right in front of us! Instead those are the folks who post "I am Darren Wilson" memes.
All I can conclude is there is a sizable number of people who equate white with American citizens and black with something that must be controlled, and is definitely "other." Different rules.

The DA here made a statement and upon a quick read, he does not appear to say anything dickish like the Ferguson DA even though I don't like this guy anyway for many other reasons:
Also, FYI - New York grand jury proceedings are secret. Donovan says he filed for a court order to make the proceedings public. So we don't know right now why they failed to indict (I'm sure the reasons are shitty anyway).

From the looks of it the entire board missed this entirely. There isn't a post at all.
And I think the issue is that they are racist, not a question. And they're willfully aware of their own privilege no matter how any times the few smart people on the board try to point it out.
Judging from my Twitter feed the protestors are all headed to the Rockefeller Center tree lighting tonight.
Maybe that will actually bring light to the issue.
I just hope NYPD learned from FPD and don't meet nonviolent protests with military equipment. Although maybe it would take violence in NYC for this to be taken seriously by he public at large

you mean this no indictment is not on the board? you're right, so far it's not. and what's the point of even posting it. That board is full of some basic bitches

I considered posting it but am afraid I'll get angrier than I already am. It's futile to try to explain to certain people why this is scary in terms of how human life is being treated. I know that we'll eat a tired "why is race brought into everything" as if it's inappropriate in these discussions.
Fuck. It's pretty insane in the neighborhood where this occurred right now - I used to work there.
This is so ridiculous. This was CAUGHT ON VIDEO and the officer was using force that ISN'T ALLOWED AS PER NYPD RULES.
I'm so angry right now. I probably should have expected this in light of Ferguson and in light of where I live being home to a lot of police officers in the NYPD but I just can't with this shit.

it is completely futile and it will cause me to 1. get so angry and 2. not pay any attention to my kids tonight b/c I will be compelled to try and refute their ridiculous positions.
i know, sorry. if it's any consolation there's not any drama in there. surprisingly.
i am interested in what lucy said about protests at the tree lighting. that would be... interesting isn't the right word for it but that's all i've got.

Rodney King was on video too ... soo ...
At least (seriously, at the very least) there was an actual trial over what happened to Rodney King.
