Running over people is a crime, too. Do the cops get to shoot the people that run the protesters over? If so, will the Fox crowd protest? And will they block roads?
I'm really sorry. My dad is completely ridiculous (flagrantly racist, etc.), but I'm able to keep him contained at a distance. It would be really tough (and unacceptable) if my H was riding the crazy train with him.

Just thought I'd offer that I haven't talked to my mother in 5 years and am quite pleased about that fact. I have no problem cutting off gangrenous tissue (if that lends you some support should you really decide to not talk to them.)

*hugs*
My family is like this, too. It's why I can't fully believe that Lys is a troll. When I go home for holidays I hear all the same things that she posts.
I wouldn't be able to handle it if DH felt that way as well. I need to be able to bitch about the crazies to him.
I will say not interacting with my brothers is pretty...freeing? I don't know if that's the right word. I have so much less drama in my life when I'm not dealing with them. My FB friends can tell you that. This would go in the "thread not about lys" but some of you ladies brought me to tears with the responses in that status where you were all called a "cabal of cunts" and I was called a cunt and an ungrateful bitch. I truly felt loved and supported.
Anyway, I'm sorry you're dealing with this. I am with NewOrleans, if you cut off the dead tissue, healthy stuff grows in its place.

This is exactly why I stomped my feet and basically had a hissy fit at the end of Thanksgiving when my dad tried to bring up Ferguson as he was getting ready to leave. In a room full of both my and dh's families I would have been pretty much the only one to think like you.
So I totally understand and I'm sorry you had to deal with that.
Yeah, My sister is in that world, hardcore, and it's really hard for me to have even minimal (FB) interactions with her. We live 3000 miles away from each other and sometimes it's just not enough.

The crazy.. or maybe not so much crazy but definitely somewhat atypical thing is that on most political subjects, we agree. They are registered democrats for Christ's sake. But my dad at least has pretty much always been racist. He basically told me when I was a teenager that if I ever dated a black man he'd kill us both. Back then I thought he was joking. Yeah no, I knew he wasn't joking but I wanted to believe he was. My mom... she just goes along with whatever he says so... there is your groupthink right there. Lol

And at the very least my H just came home from work and said that they are crazy assholes and we aren't bailing them out if they murder anyone with their cars. Lol
Also, I got tons of confirmation this week that I should never engage most of my coworkers in any discussion of current events. Not as bad as family, but discouraging.
I'll just commiserate. I wouldn't have ever described my mom as a racist growing up. We had black friends over to our house, my sister's BF was an Indian girl who lived down the street, and was over all the time. No one ever said anything about it.
We grew up, moved out, got married, etc., and then Obama became president and my mom stopped getting the newspaper so that she wouldn't have to see his face. (My DH tapped a picture of him to the inside of their shower while we stayed there once to get at them, lol) When the Regis and Kelly show became Kelly and Michael she decided to stop watching it. My 1 million year old stepdad suggested that "most of the violence from football players comes from the black ones". My mom tried to bring up Ferguson and I just shut down and change the subject cuz I really really really don't wanna hate my mom but that conversation would have sealed it for me.
My mom also once said that Global Warming was caused by people exercising too much. She was serious. My stepdad once said that I moved in with DH (then my BF) because I "watched too much FRIENDS". So there is no common sense in these people's heads. I dunno what to do. I do address what I can if I know a quick and clean way to say it, but unless I prepare those key phrases I'm pretty much just left shocked and saddened.

Oh hell no. I have kept my ear buds in all day every day since the GJ decision. If not I'd have gone postal by now Lol
